Steven Warr Obituary

Steven Warr
01/23/1941 - 01/03/2025
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, patriot, educator, innovator, and quiet leader, Steve Warr of Hockley, Texas, passed away at the age of 83, following a courageous battle with leukemia on January 3, 2025, in Tomball, Texas.
Steven "Steve" Packer Warr was born on January 23, 1941, in Alhambra, Calif., one of six siblings born to Joseph Packer Warr and Dorothy Louise Nay Warr. Steve graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, Oregon in 1958. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
Steve served two stints as an enlisted soldier before being selected as an officer candidate. He was commissioned in 1967, going on to serve in a variety of roles including, cavalry troop commander, instructor, and in Army Intelligence. Steve served for 32 years in the Army, Oregon National Guard, and Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994.
While stationed with the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment in Baumholder, Germany, Steve met his treasured wife, Kathy Warr. They were married in Kathy's hometown of Pawtucket, R.I., in 1968. They had two sons, Dan and Ken.
Steve attended college after his active service, earning degrees from the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. He and his young family moved across the country to Oregon in 1973, where he began work in his second career, education.
Steve taught high school and coached football and track at several schools in central Oregon. In 1983, he moved his family again, this time to Houston. He worked as a teacher at H.P. Carter Education Center, Cypress Creek High School, Magnolia High School, and Klein High School. He retired in 2019 after 36 years as an educator.
During his teaching career, Steve also served as an acclaimed pole vault coach, coaching several vaulters to the Texas high school championships. To help in his coaching, Steve taught himself to pole vault in his 30s, and went on to compete successfully in state, national, and international Master's track meets. Steve also coached highly successful computer science and robotics teams.
Steve and Kathy joined the Tomball Promenaders Square Dancing Club in 1996.
Throughout his life, Steve was an innovator. Steve wrote two books, a science fiction novel, and a guide to Java programming. Steve created and programmed an online card game called Thunderbolt. The fun and social game brought together friends and family across the country for years. Around the house, if a problem required fixing, Steve would tackle it with innovative solutions, usually involving foam rubber and velcro.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sandra Warr; his brother, Joseph Warr, Jr.; and son, Kenneth Warr. Steve is survived by his wife, Kathleen Boardman Warr; son, Dan Warr; daughter-in-law, Bobbie Warr; granddaughters, Alexis and Jessi-Claire Warr; grandsons, Brendan and Alex Warr; brothers, Barry, Nick (Susan), and Dennis (Marti) Warr.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on January 21, at 10:00 a.m., at Klein Funeral Home, 1400 West Main, Tomball, Texas 77375. A graveside service will follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the charity of your choice.

Steve and I are cousins born less than a year apart. Distances were long between visits, but I remember the room he shared with his older brother Barry who was my sister´s age. That room had glow-in-the-dark stars on their ceiling and a pull-down model train layout on half a wall. It was a magical room that tells me that his father, my Uncle Joe, and his mother, Aunt Dorothy, put a lot of time, effort and love into those boys and they grew into strong, gentle men.

I love and will miss my brother Steve. He was a great friend throughout my entire life. Yes, he had many great accomplishments throughout his life, but his greatest accomplishment was a loving, warm and secure family environment. Happy trails, Steve.

Steve was loved and respected by so many in our Tomball Promenader family. Mark and I were so pleased to see Steve and play games with him at a recent club game night. He will be missed by so many. Our hearts and prayers are with Kathy and their family.

I was so sad seeing that Steve died. Steven Warr was our 4th son, Joshua Nonmacher 's teacher at Klein High School- he was always so kind and welcoming especially to new dancers. So much fun- "BOUDREAUX!"
And those Halloween costumes he and Kathy came up with each year!
And that wonderful patriotic ceremony Veteran's Day each year.
I just envision him being welcomed with loving arms into heaven.
Prayers for you, Kathy, and your family. Steve is truly missed.

The world lost a great man and one heck of a pole vault coach! Colonel taught me so much more than just how to vault, he taught me how to handle adversity and have grace in victory. He was always a step ahead in technology and I will never forget the excitement of seeing that minivan drive up to a meet with all the poles taped to the top! Plant high, rock back and fly away Colonel!

Sandra, I think that we may have attended St. Michael's elementary school in Houston 1955-56. My sincere condolences in the loss of your brother, Steve.
