Steven Lee Westphal
February 23, 1950 – July 20, 2025
Steven Lee Westphal, 75, of Sparta, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on February 23, 1950, in Rensselaer, Indiana, Steven was the son of the late Thornton Westphal and Jane Boehning Westphal. He grew up in Francesville, Indiana, and later moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he met the
love of his life, Gwendolyn Westphal.
Steven's career began humbly, selling sweepers door to door. His natural talent for sales led him into the automotive industry, where he thrived and eventually became the owner of multiple car dealerships at
different times in his life. They were located in Dayton, Ohio; Grand Junction, Colorado; Orlando, Punta Gorda, and Cape Coral, Florida; Smithville, Tennessee; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
In 2010, Steven opened Rib City in Cookeville, Tennessee, a restaurant operated by his son Chad Westphal and daughter Crystal Westphal Cheney.
Steven was a devoted husband to Gwendolyn Westphal, his wife and partner in life for 54 years. Together, they raised two children, Chad Westphal and Crystal Westphal Cheney. He welcomed their spouses, Leia Westphal and Jacob Cheney, as part of the family. Steven was a cherished grandfather to Evan Cheney, Alex Cheney, and
Connor Westphal, and his legacy lives on in their hearts and lives.
Outside of work, Steven enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved boating, fishing, golfing, riding his Harley-Davidson, and attending NASCAR races.
He is also survived by his brother Ted Westphal and wife Jan, their daughter Tracy Woodward and her sons, Brandon Tagge and James Woodward.
Steve was also an uncle to his nephew Aaron and his sons, Dylan and Carson.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Thornton and Jane Boehning Westphal, and his niece, Carrie Lynn Westphal.
Steven will be remembered for his caring nature, strength, entrepreneurial spirit, and the love he poured into his family. Whether it was offering advice, lending a hand, or simply being present, he was always there when needed.
Visitation will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 1786 Smithville Hwy, Sparta, TN 38583, beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 24th. The memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m., with burial at Saylors Cemetery afterward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Saylors Cemetery, Treasurer, 305 E. 14th Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.
His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure. He was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
