A memorial service to honor Sue Anderson Avery, longtime seventh grade English teacher at Ouachita Parish Junior High School, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 12, 2025, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.
Sue received her unexpected call from our Heavenly Father on Monday, June 30 after a battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice "Granny" DeHart also of Monroe, LA.
Sue was born on October 21, 1948, in Wytheville, VA. She was married to Ronald L. Avery for 56 years. In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by two sons, Joshua Avery of Monroe, LA and Caleb Avery of Ft. Worth, TX. She also leaves grandchildren, Logan and Lucas Avery of West Monroe, LA; Carolyn Avery of Monroe, LA; and Aidan and Remi Avery of Ft. Worth, TX.
During the early years of their marriage Ron and Sue were stationed in Germany, visited several countries in Europe, then settled in Monroe to rear their family. Sue earned degrees from Northeast Louisiana University in journalism and advanced degrees in English education. Most of Mrs. Avery’s 30 years of teaching were at Ouachita Parish Junior High School. There were few places in the Monroe area where former students didn’t recognize Mrs. Avery. And she loved to say, “They are some of mine!”
Until her death, Sue was an active volunteer with Rays of Sonshine Ministries. She was as confident as Billy Graham when she said, “Jesus loves me, this I know.” Friends and family will cherish and be blessed by her memory.
If you wish to honor her memory, donations can be made to Rays of Sonshine Ministries or your local animal rescue shelter.
