Sue Calvin (Bailey) Whatley

Sue Calvin (Bailey) Whatley was born on March 24, 1929 in Newbern, Tennessee. She was the youngest of seven children born to James and Susie Bailey.

Sue was educated in the public schools of Newbern and she graduated from Bruce High School in Dyersburg, Tennessee. She graduated from Tennessee State University with an associate degree in business and a minor in English.

Upon the completion of her studies, Sue moved to Fremont, Ohio in 1949. Sue met Arthur Whatley soon thereafter, and they were married. They were devoted to each other during their 30 years of marriage which ended when Arthur died suddenly in 1979. Their union produced three sons, Larry, Mac and Brian.

She was employed for 15 years at the Erie Army Depot in Port Clinton, Ohio. Sue was last employed there as the Administrative Assistant to the Sgt. Major. Sue then worked in Toledo in the Federal Building in Defense Contracting Administration Services. In 1979, Sue began employment at the Fremont office of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services. She retired in 1993 from WSOS Community Action Service.

Sue was an active in many religious and civic organizations. She and Arthur were charter members of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Bible Study Teacher, a member of the Trustee Board and on the Mothers' Board. Her civic affiliations included the League of Women Voters, the Fremont Business Club, and the Fremont Kiwanis Club. She was a former member of the Executive Board of Treatment Alternative Sandusky County and the Executive Board of the Sandusky County YMCA.

Sue died on December 14, 2020 in DeSoto, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Brian; siblings: James, John, Burnice, Mayola (Shelton) Jones, Pauline (William) Walker, and Lois (Shannon) Flowers and grandson Enrico Darnell Whatley.

She leaves to mourn her passing two sons: Rev. Larry (Doris) of Atlanta, GA, and Mac (Bertha) of DeSoto, TX. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Felicia Dew Whatley of Mansfield, TX; grandchildren, Larisha (Wesley) Wilcox of Atlanta, Ga, Aaron Whatley of Austin, TX, Arthur (Wade) of Atlanta, Ga, Allison Whatley of Mansfield, TX, and Cameron Whatley of Mansfield, TX. As Granny Grand, she dearly loved; her great-grandchildren Noah, Jonah and Jaleah Wilcox. Her Goddaughter, Lori Price Brown of Fremont also survives her. A special niece, Sandra K. Reynolds of East Cleveland, OH, mourns her as well. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews in many states.

Visitation will be held on December 21, 2020 from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the Hanneman-Chudzinski-Keller Funeral Home. A private service will be held on December 22, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of floral tributes, the family requests donations be made in her name to Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 927 Stilwell Ave, Fremont, OH 43420.
