Susan was born in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late Francis and Santa (LaValle) Brooks. She grew up and graduated from Jamestown schools. After high school she attended SUC (SUNY) Fredonia where she not only received her bachelor's degree, but also met the man who would become her husband, Gary. The two were married on August 19, 1978. Susan furthered her education again and received her master's degree from SUNY Buffalo. Gary and Susan spent over 7 years in Tonawanda, NY before relocating to Seneca Falls.
Besides her family, Susan's passion in life was music. Not only did she teach music out of her home for many years, but she was a clarinetist, performing with the Seneca Falls Community Band, the Finger Lakes Concert Band in Canandaigua for over 30 years, the Fairport Musicale, Rochester Morning Musicale, and participated in the Composers Conference and Chamber Music Workshop in Massachusetts. Additionally, she volunteered extensively on the Geneva Concert Board, Seneca Falls Community Band, and the Composers Conference.
In addition to her passion for music, she also enjoyed gardening and plants. She volunteered her time as a Master Gardener through Cornell University and worked at Yorkshire Gardens. Not only did Susan have her hobbies and passions, but she also had her faith. She would go on GodQuest silent retreats, participated in bible study groups, and was a member at Harvest Field Baptist Church in Fayette for many years.
Susan is survived by Gary, her husband of 43 years; son, Greg (Sanjarrah) Horvath of Utica, NY; daughter, Karen (David) Zona of Seneca Falls; brothers, Peter (Sharon) Brooks of NV, Lawrence Brooks of IN; brother-in-law, Glen (Debra) Horvath of TX; aunts and cousins in Jamestown, NY, as well as extended family and friends.
