Susan Corpening Obituary

Susan Corpening

May 16, 1941 - August 24, 2025

Susan Birdsong Corpening died in her sleep on August 24, 2025. She had been suffering from a litany of health problems. Susan was born in Suffolk, Virginia, to Harvard and Mary Taylor Withers Birdsong, in 1941. Educated in local schools, she attended Randolph Macon Woman's College before transferring to UNC-CH. While there, she met and subsequently married John Corpening in 1965.

In 1969, Susan gave birth to identical twin daughters, Mary and Sara. They were the focus of Susan's and Johnny's lives.

Susan devoted herself to the community serving on many boards. She savored life. Susan was a member of the Women's Senior Golf Association, an accomplished cook and talented gardener.

Susan leaves behind Sara Whiteford and husband, Erik and their daughters, Lucy and Ella of Corte Madera, California; Mary Barber and her sons, Jackson, William and John of Asheville, North Carolina. She is also survived by her sister, Muff Nolde of Richmond, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews; and her soul mate, Johnny.

There will be no funeral. Susan left her body to High Point University to benefit science.

Memorials may be made in her memory to the Resident Care Fund at Pennybyrn, 109 Penny Road, High Point, NC 27260. This fund benefits residents who have exhausted their resources.

Condolences may be shared online on Susan's tribute page at www.cumbyfuneral.com.
