Susan Jean Green 73 of Abilene passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family August 4, 2025. Graveside service will be held Friday August 8, 2025 at 10am at Hawley Cemetery.
Susan was born in Breckenridge, Texas to Virgil and Helen Richardson in September of 1951. She spent her early childhood in Hobbs, NM then returned with her family to Breckenridge. After high school she went on to graduate from Angelo State University with a degree in elementary education that she used to touch the lives of countless children as a 3rd grade teacher. Her favorite students were always the wild ones no one else wanted in their class. She had a way with even the most hard to reach kids, she loved them and they loved her. Susan married the love of her life, Marshall Green, on August 29th, 2007 and they have spent the last almost 18 years on the ranch together living their 'happily ever after.' She fully enjoyed retirement life, doing what she wanted to do when she wanted to do it. Susan spent many an afternoon fishing and just appreciating the outdoors. She was constantly picking up critters like horney toads, lizards, turtles, jumbo grasshoppers, tarantulas, baby bunnies- anything she could use for 'show and tell' with the grandkids. She was a hands on Nana, always taking them exploring, building forts and making core memories. She was also a dedicated cowboy wife, working the chute to help Marshall rope and filming him at all his ropings. Later in life, her favorite pastimes were reading books in her easy chair and making weekly 'investment' trips to the casino with Marshall. She was just a 'tiny bit' competitive and was known to sull up a little if Marshall came home with more winnings than her or if she got beat in a game of dominoes with Will and Marshall.
Susan was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents- Virgil and Helen, and her mother in law Johan Green. The list is long of those who will miss her, with those closest to her being her husband Marshall, her daughter Stacie Stephenson (and husband Byron) her stepson Will Green (and wife Meg) granddaughter Taylor Carlton (and husband Connor) grandson Brock Stephenson, granddaughters Gemma and Marlee Green and great granddaughter Colbie Carlton as well as many other family members and close friends. She loved all of them so well and leaves a huge void in their hearts. She spoiled her kids and grandkids silly, making Easter and Valentine's baskets for everyone regardless if they were 2 years old or 42 and don't even get us started on Christmas. You won't find a more thoughtful and generous human than Susan Jean.
The family of Susan Green wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to Hendrick Hospice for the amazing care she received the last month of her life. Instead of flowers, donations to Abilene Public Library or Hendrick Hospice Care in her name would be honoring and greatly appreciated.
