Dr. Susan Ivy Allen Hime Dr. Susan Ivy Allen Hime’s incredible journey of life ended tragically in Hope, Idaho on June 24, 2003. Susan lived her life with freedom, independence, integrity and generosity. She greeted everyone with a brilliant smile and a true acceptance. Finding goodness in people was easy for her. Susan was a well-loved and accomplished orthodontist. Together with her husband, David, they created a highly praised orthodontic practice that has helped many Austinites. Susan had a genuine relationship with each patient and their family, and cared more about each one as an individual, than about their teeth. The philosophy of providing a fun, caring and relaxed environment for her patients is a true reflection of Susan’s spirit of life. Susan was born March 27, 1964 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Lexington, Kentucky. She lived there until leaving to attend Indiana University and later the University of Kentucky. At Indiana University, Susan was an outstanding competitive diver. She was granted early admission to the University of Louisville School of Dentistry after only two years of undergraduate education. She graduated with honors in 1988 and immediately began a three-year orthodontic residency at the University of North Carolina, generally considered one of the best orthodontic programs in the country. She graduated in 1991 with a Masters Degree in Orthodontics. Upon graduation, she was awarded the UNC Alumni research award for her research on temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). After graduating, she immediately moved to Austin to join David in their practice of orthodontics. Susan was a board certified diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics. Susan and David married in 1990, and together they created a beautiful story of life and love. When not in the office, Susan could be found on the tennis courts around Austin. She loved to travel and recently returned from New Zealand and Australia with David. Susan was an avid amateur jeweler and jewelry designer. A voracious reader, she had at least 10 books on her nightstand at all times. She loved fitness, especially running, and cherished her dogs and cats. Susan always wanted to share with others. She had a generous accepting spirit that will be missed by so many people. Susan lived a beautiful life and she died in a hiking accident in a place that was very special to her and David. Susan is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Alison Ivy. Susan is survived by her husband, Dr. David Hime; her parents Dr. L. Chase and Sue Allen; her brothers Dr. L. Chase Allen, Jr., Christopher M. Allen, and John M. Allen; her in-laws Rev. Jim and Beverly Hime, Elizabeth and Brent Bergt, John and Teresa Hime, Nicola Allen, Patricia Allen, Lisa Allen, and her beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 9-11 am, Tuesday July 1, 2003, at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Remembrance Gardens at Riverbend, 4214 Capital of Texas Highway, Austin.
