Susan Elaine Kotarba, 76, of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on March 30, 1949 in Plymouth, Massachusetts to Charles and Madeline (Johnson) Edwards. She worked at the Denver Public Library for more than 40 years, starting as a library clerk and ending her career as the director of public services, in which position she oversaw the building and renovation of multiple libraries. She had a vision and belief in public service, and believed deeply in supporting and working with all of Denver's diverse populations. She was an avid tennis player, once advancing to the Colorado districts, and she enjoyed the enduring friendships she built with her tennis companions. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Paul Kotarba; her daughter and son-in-law, Alexis and Jonathan Smallridge; her cherished granddaughter Cecilia; her three beloved sisters, Karin, Jeanne, and Sarah; and her sister and brother-in-law Susan and Tim Kotarba. A celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation. With her vivacity, Susan was a force for transformation; with her kindness, she brought out the best in everyone who worked with her; through her calm, she guided public library services through challenging times. I am so grateful for her leadership and for the mark she left on our community. Wishing the Kotarba family the best during this difficult time.

I worked with Susan for several years while working as a librarian at the Decker library. She was a wonderful leader and mentor to me during the first years of my career. Her steady leadership and thoughtfulness were appreciated by her colleagues at DPL. She will certainly be missed.

Susan Kotarba served as my supervisor at Barnum/Westwood before I retired in 2003. I was consistently impressed by her organizational skills and professionalism. In particular, I admired her exceptional leadership in libraries. She treated me with the utmost respect and provided competent guidance during my final year and a half at DPL. I gained valuable knowledge and insights under her mentorship.
