Susan Loftus Obituary

In Loving Memory of Susan
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Susan J. Loftus, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on November 9, 1963 to Gerard Loftus and the late Dorothy Demlik. Susan was a woman of remarkable beauty, both inside and out. Her infectious smile and laughter warmed the hearts of all who knew her.
Susan, affectionately known as the "gadget queen," possessed a remarkable knack for innovation and creativity. Her ingenuity knew no bounds, and her ability to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary was truly captivating.
At the core of Susan's world was her deep and unwavering love for her wife, Terrie Young. Her dedication to her family and an extensive circle of friends was a testament to her kind and loving spirit. Susan cherished her fur babies (Peanut, Hannah, Lucy, Bogey, Dash).
Susan lived life to the fullest. Her sense of adventure and exploration in the culinary world enriched the lives of many. Higgins Beach, Maine was her happy place and Susan, Terrie and family shared many cherished summers together in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Susan's passionate love for sports, whether cheering for the Maryland Terps, the Washington Mystics, or the New York Yankees, revealed her spirited nature. As a dedicated PE educator, influencer and agitator,Susan spoke truth to power to change things for the better for kids, schools and her community. She leaves Burning Tree Elementary behind a legacy of inspiration.
Left to cherish Susan's memory are her loving wife Terrie Young, father Gerard Loftus, sister Linda Brown (husband Rick), brother Thomas Loftus, niece Sarah Zewatsky, nephew Drew Hoover, and countless friends, whose lives were forever enriched by Susan's presence. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Barbara Loftus.
As we bid farewell to Susan, let us remember her as a beacon of light whose love and passion touched the lives of many. Her absence will be deeply felt, and her memory cherished by all who had the privilege of sharing in her journey.
Donations in her memory can be made to Shepherd's Table, PetConnect Rescue, or PG-SPCA.

Now I know why Susan has been on my mind this week--we lost her just a year ago. I met Susan first as a teacher at Einstein High School. She was committed to raising the front-line educator's voice in policy-making to assure that students thrived. She worked side by side with me when I was the union president, being one of the first leaders of the Councils on Teaching and Learning. But more than that, she was my friend and great supporter in my campaign to be elected to the MD House of Delegates. My wife and I miss her.

I had Ms. Loftus as my elementary school PE teacher over 15 years ago. Because of her, I would tell everyone that PE was my favorite subject. I still remember her bright energy and colorful outfits, and the inventive games she came up with (given that the school didn't have an actual gym at the time). At the time I was a quiet, quirky kid, and appreciated how she made everyone feel welcome.

I only knew Susan through her love and care for her Dad Gerry Loftus. Her dedication to him illustrated her dedication to family. I'm sure a Choir of Angels greeted her and sped her into Paradise!

Everything Susan did, she did with complete passion and excitement. She loved her teams (I first got to know her when I was working for the Maryland Women's Basketball program) and traveled the country to see them play. She was a dedicated "Rebounder" with the Maryland program (team fan group). But she was also passionate at work and a strong advocate for Physical Education and Health curriculum. She worked hard to advocate for teachers both with the union and in the community and campaigned for Apple Ballot candidates. She was an incredible "force of nature" and was beloved by many. She will be missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing Susan during the years I was principal at Burning Tree, and the benefit of her wisdom as she worked on the school's leadership team. We all loved Susan, not only for the way she built the students' confidence, but also for her many accomplishments and contributions to the school's spirit and positive climate. Her memory is a blessing. My deepest condolences to Terrie and the rest of Susan's family.

Susan was a great person. She had a great smile and she will forever be a fond memory. "Bad call!" or "Put in the volleyball player!". I will definitely miss her.

My Condolences to Terrie and Susan's family. The obituary really captured Susan. I have so many memories of Susan but I will speak of the last time I spent time with Susan first. Lori and I had 4 tickets to the Elton John concert at National stadium. So we called Susan and Terrie to join us. We had a great time together and spent the night at their house. Susan as always made sure we got to the event safely, in plenty of time and got us home.
The other memory I will add is of Lori and I along with Terrie follow Susan and supporting her as she lived out one of her many dreams to run the NY marathon for her 50th birthday. Susan was a one of a kind and I am honored to be to lucky enough to call her friend.

So sorry to learn of Susan´s passing. We shared a brief moment in the spotlight when a video of us getting off the teacher bus to march on the capitol was shared in the national news!

Susan was a true friend. Always ready to help, to give advice and she always lent a hand when things were hard. As a teacher, she always was willing to share and provide insight no matter the situation. You will be missed. Rest in peace
