Susan Kay Malan

Susan Kay Malan, 68, a resident of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Boone Hospital.
Susan was born on April 15, 1956, in Ferguson, Missouri, the daughter of Joseph Ryan Rath and Margaret (Jindra) Rath. On October 10, 1980, in Ferguson, she married Barry Lee Malan, and he survives.
Susan graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and later received her Master's Degree from Mizzou in Nursing. She spent 35 years as an RN with Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. When she wasn't working and tending to veterans' medical needs, she loved traveling with her family and friends. She loved musical theatre and enjoyed being in several musicals and choirs in her younger years. She was a member of the Corvette Club with her husband. She was an avid gardener who loved floral arranging and took several classes to improve her skills. Susan loved her family and cherished all the time she could spend with them. She loved her animals, from her dogs to her cats and cows.
In addition to her husband of over 43 years, she will be sadly missed and forever remembered by two children, Kathryn "Katie" Chester and husband Adam of Ormond Beach, FL and Ryan Malan and wife Rachel of Columbia; five grandchildren, Isabella Chester, Mya Malan, William Malan, Ariya Malan and Aniya Malan; one sister, Rosemary Clawson and husband Tony of St. Louis; three nieces and one nephew.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Rita Parisey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at St. Thomas More Newman Center with Father Dan Merz celebrating Mass. A visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until Mass time at the church. Following Mass Susan will be laid to rest in the Oakland Church Cemetery.
