TRENTON
Susan Starr, known by all as Susie, died unexpectedly on June 3, 2024, at the age of 74, leaving her family and friends heartbroken.
Despite her kind and gentle nature, Susie could be tough when toughness was called for and, sadly, it was called for too often. She was a three-time cancer survivor. Over the past year, Susie bravely battled an infection stemming from a tear in her esophagus.
Though she was easygoing, she was also enterprising.
After serving in the Women's Army Corps and as a case officer in Army Intelligence, Susie retired from the military and opened a successful antiques business in Maryland. She and Chuck later bought and ran the Open Hearth Inn, a bed and breakfast in Trenton, Maine. She was elected a Select Board Member and served as Tax Assessor, secretary of the Trenton Historical Society and the Trenton Chamber of Commerce. She also wrote three books. One of them, Memoirs of a Mad Innkeeper, included recipes of the muffins she baked each morning while running the Open Hearth Inn. Another, The Birthright, was a story she based on a diary she purchased in an antiques shop. The third was a children's book, Sammie the Salmon. At the time of her death, she was working on a fourth book about women in the Army.
Susie was one of Westfield, Massachusetts' finest exports. She will be remembered for her ready smile, her sweet disposition and her brave heart.
In addition to Chuck, her devoted husband of 43 years, she leaves behind sons Danny and wife Amanda; Andy and wife Bethany; her adored and adoring grandchildren, Nicholas and Samantha; a half-brother, Bobby; and a legion of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. She will be so greatly missed.
Graveside service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Susie's name, to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org/donate or American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Sue was the sweetest most wonderful friend anyone could ever have. We were like sisters. Sue and I shared soo many interests. She was instrumental in getting me to open my own Antique Store in Historic Ellicott City, Maryland. She was a very talented lady in business and as an author of 3 books. It was terrible all that she went through. Hopefully she´s at peace after such a struggle to get well. I and soo many others will miss her so much, but we will remember forever herwarm beautiful smile.
Sending soo much Love to Chuck, Danny, Andy and all of her loving family.
Joanie
