Susan Trotter Obituary

Susan Collins Trotter

January 2, 1937 - February 1, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Susan Collins Trotter passed away peacefully at Sharon Towers in Charlotte on February 1, 2024 at the age of 87. She was born January 2,1937 in the Virginia mountain town of Covington, the daughter of the late Michael McHale "Hale" Collins and Eleanor "Burr" (nee McCoy). Susan was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, George Reid Trotter, Jr. She is survived by two sons, George Reid III and Michael McHale "Hale," (Katrina) both of Charlotte.

The scenic beauty of Virginia inspired her as a contemporary impressionist artist. This passion led her to study at Richmond Professional Institute before moving to Charlotte. Susan had a fabulous fashion sense and was always impeccably dressed. In Charlotte, she found work as a fashion illustrator. She ended her career in commercial art upon marrying, but continued to study art. Her studies took her across the United States and Europe.

As an adult, Susan spent holidays in Virginia where she founded Thistledown Farm Artist Workshops. There, she hosted workshops for many renowned instructors and artists. Susan also enjoyed time there surrounded by family. She loved telling funny stories and had a mischievous sense of humor and a great laugh. She also loved to host her grandchildren and nieces for art and sewing lessons.

Susan's home was a revolving door to family and friends. She entertained with grace and flair. Her easy smile turned acquaintances into friends, and she cherished her friends, many of whom remained by her side until the end.

In addition to her sons, Susan is survived by her grandchildren, McHale and Andie and a brother, Michael McHale Collins (Ellen) of Hot Springs, Virginia and many other cherished relatives.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the fabulous nurses at Sharon Towers and Hospice for all the kindness and compassion they showed Susan during her illness.

She will be fondly remembered for her artistic talent, incredible generosity, and her fun-loving nature. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to VIA Health Partners- Hospice care. https://www.viagiving.org/donating.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm Thursday, February 8, 2024, at the Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.
