Susanna Brooks, age 80, a lifelong resident of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024 surrounded by those she loved. Born and raised on Foulk Road, Susanna's journey through life reflected her deep roots in the community she adored. Never one to venture far from the place she called home, she lived a rich life filled with love, laughter, and a passion for those she cherished.
Susanna's remarkable career began at the age of 9, when she took on her first job as a paper carrier. She went on to serve milkshakes and later worked as a corporate officer for Walter S. Bandurski. Her sharp mind and strong work ethic led her to a fulfilling post-retirement role as an office manager for Delaware Attorney Services.
Susanna's joy for life spilled over into many aspects of her world. She was a woman of grace with a love for the simple pleasures-like enjoying a Jim Beam on occasion. Her infectious spirit touched everyone around her. She was deeply devoted to her family and friends, and none more so than her beloved husband, Charlie, with whom she shared 22 wonderful years of marriage before his passing. He was truly the love of her life.
Animals also held a special place in Susanna's heart, and she cared deeply for her many cats over the years, each with a personality all their own. From Herman the Terrible to Pumpkin, and most recently Bugsy and Sunshine, her home was always filled with their warmth and companionship.
The greatest joy of Susanna's life was her daughter, Steff DiMartine. She would often tell friends, "I got exactly what I wanted in Steff," and their bond was unbreakable. Susanna's love, wisdom, and unwavering support shaped Steff's life and the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Susanna was also blessed with lifelong friendships, particularly with her best friend Liz Donahue, lovingly known as Tibby. Their remarkable friendship spanned an incredible 82 years, a testament to the enduring bond they shared. Liz, alongside Susanna, weathered every high and low with strength, humor, and unconditional love.
Susanna was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Suzie Burrows, her brother John R. Burrows, her cousin Doris, her nephew John F. Burrows, and her beloved husband, Charlie.
She is survived by her daughter Steff DiMartine and her husband Nick; her adored cats, Bugsy and Sunshine; cousins Cindy Wright (Jeff) and Vicky Dmytrus (Dan); her dearest friend Liz Donahue (Kenneth); a bonus son Tim Wegemer, along with a wonderful circle of caring friends who are like family.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, September 28, from 10-11AM followed by a Funeral Service at 11AM. Interment will follow at Chester Bethel Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.
Susanna will be remembered for her generous spirit, her fierce loyalty, and her immense capacity for love. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Susanna's memory to Brandywine Valley SPCA, Delaware Hospice or Special Olympics Delaware.
Susanna Brooks, though gone from this world, will forever live in the stories we tell, the smiles she brought, and the love she left behind. Online condolences can be shared at www.paganofuneralhome.com.
