Sushama "Mala" Roy, a beloved wife, mother, and community pillar, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on March 3, 1944, in Calcutta, India, Mala's life was a tapestry of resilience, grace, and an unwavering commitment to those she held dear.
Mala's journey began in Calcutta, where she cultivated a deep appreciation for education and culture, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1967, she embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to the United States where she built a home with her devoted husband, Ranendra Nath Roy, in Pearl River, New York. Together, they raised two sons, Ruben and Shuman, filling their lives with love, wisdom, and the values of hard work and compassion.
A woman of remarkable dedication, Mala's professional life began in 1978 when she joined Inter-County Savings Bank as a Bank Teller, marking the start of an illustrious 34-year career in the savings and loan industry, which culminated in a Private Banker title and numerous awards along the way. In her roles, Mala showcased her intelligence, warmth, and knack for connecting with people-a knack which inevitably led to a much longer-than planned trip to Pearl River ShopRite where there were very few aisles in which someone did not stop to say hello.
After retiring from HSBC, Mala embraced new passions, notably golf, which became a cherished hobby. Mala's entrepreneurial spirit and love for wellness also shone brightly through Pearl River Yoga, the studio she founded and ran for 15 years. There, she introduced community members to the transformative beauty of yoga, blending her Indian heritage with her American life. Her classes were more than exercise-they were a sanctuary of peace, reflection, and connection, reflecting Mala's gift for nurturing others.
Mala is survived by her husband, Ranendra Nath Roy, her sons, Ruben and Shuman, daughters-in-law, Anne and Rhoda, and granddaughters, Madeleine, Layla and Reese, as well as a community of close friends that extends far and wide. She leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and a quiet courage that will live on in all who knew her.
A celebration of Mala's life will be held at the Nyack Field Club, 335 N Midland Avenue in Nyack, NY, where friends and family are invited to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a local Volunteer Fire Department, such as the Pearl River Hook & Ladder Co. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we take comfort in knowing her spirit continues to guide us, much like the steady rhythm of a yoga breath or the arc of a perfect golf swing.
