Suzanne Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 9, 2026.
Suzanne Cummins (Black) Davis has died after a long struggle with dementia. She was born on February 21, 1935 to Otis and Portia (nee Steele) Cummins in Columbus, Ohio.

Suzie, as she was known, spent most of her life in Mansfield, having grown up here and returned after being graduated from Northwestern University. She was well known for her community involvement with organizations such as the The Rehab Center (now Catalyst), Community Health Action Project (CHAP), the Women's Fund of the Richland County Foundation, Kingwood Center, Mansfield Art Center, the First Congregational Church, and many other organizations too numerous to mention. At a time when women were just starting to hold positions of leadership, Suzie blazed a trail.

During her professional career, she was best known for her tenure as the Director of Leadership Unlimited, during which time Suzie helped to introduce hundreds of class members to the positive facets of Richland County. She was the 1994 recipient of the Athena Award, among many other community accolades. Suzie was an unflagging supporter of Mansfield and Richland County.

In addition to her professional contributions, and dedication to area non-profits, Suzie raised a family with first husband Frank Black, and second husband Rees Davis. She is survived by her brother Otis "Koke" Cummins and wife Cheryl; sister Sara Cummins and companion Bernard Fuller; daughter Libby Black and treasured friend Kelly McDevitt; son Andy Black and wife Hope Mitnick, and their daughter Madina "Maddie" Black; and daughter Katy Davis. Also among her loved ones are cousin Karen Bierly and family, as well as many nieces and nephews and their children. Her family is grateful to Cindy Niswander, a good friend and long time caregiver.

Over the course of her illness, Suzie was assisted by many thoughtful and caring health care workers at Wedgewood Estates and from Hospice. We are very appreciative of them all.

She is predeceased by her parents; beloved son Tom Black; and husband Rees Davis.

A memorial honoring Suzie's life will be held in the Spring. The date and location are yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Women's Fund held by the Richland County Foundation or the Community Health Access Project (CHAP).
