Suzanne Kendall Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Omps Funeral Home and Cremation Center - Amherst Chapel on Feb. 2, 2026.
Suzanne "Suzie" Hall Barr Kendall, age ninety, of Winchester, Virginia, died on January 28, 2026 at The Willows at Meadow Branch.

Suzie was born April 6, 1935 in Winchester, VA, daughter of Herman Smith Barr and Thelma Richard Barr. She was a former elementary education teacher, having graduated from Longwood College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church since 1945, where she held many offices, including Stewardship Chairman, Bible Study Fellowship Small Group Leader, and both Vice President and President of The United Methodist Women. She was a member of Esther Circle, the Council of Ministries, the Administrative Board, and the Christian Women's Club Board, where she served as Prayer Advisor. She was a faithful Christian and church leader who organized and participated in many activities, Bible studies, and community outreach events, making an immeasurable impact on the life of Braddock Street Church.

Suzie's community service extended beyond her church in many ways, including thirty years of membership in the Hawthorne Garden Club, serving as President during part of that time. She was an honorary member of the Winchester Medical Center Auxiliary for over thirty years, and a member of the American Cancer Society. And she served in various positions over many years with the Apple Blossom Festival.

Suzie was a beloved citizen of Winchester all her life, generously giving her time, energy, and money to improve the lives of everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. She grew up on Braddock Street, graduated from Handley High School, raised her family in Whittier Acres, and left her impression across the entire community, with indelible impact. Winchester is better off for having a daughter like Suzanne Kendall. She was an involved citizen, a true friend, a devoted wife, a loving Christian, and an extraordinary mother.

Suzie is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Dr. Robert G. Kendall, and her three children: Edward Gentry Kendall II of Fredericksburg, VA, Brent Riley Kendall of Sammamish, WA, and Kathryn Kendall Murphy of Winchester, VA. She had six grandchildren: Amy Elizabeth Kendall, Riley Kathryn Kendall, John Robert Kendall, Emily Hall Murphy, Sarah Margaret Murphy, and Hannah Elizabeth Murphy. Her brother, Herman Smith Barr, Jr., died on Feb 27. 2014. Her sister-in-law, Peggy Blackman Barr, died on Jan 20, 2022.

Suzie's funeral service will be at Omp's Funeral Home on Amherst Street on Monday, February 9th at 10:30am, with a reception to follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the Braddock Street United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, or the Blue Ridge Hospice.

Very sad and sorry for Katie and all of her family. I will always remember walking through the neighborhood and her driving by and waving in her car with her `Suz 11´ license plate- she was a truly kind and lovely lady. As a kid she often caught me at my worst (jumping into her front bushes and spilling a glass aquarium of sea monkeys all over their new carpet) and though she wasn´t pleased with me at that moment, she was even kind in expressing her displeasure. She was always giving rides and asking how we were and about our families...a really kind hearted and loving mother to her kid´s friends. Thinking of the family with love-

My grandmother meant the world to me. Some of my favorite memories are being with her at the Apple Blossom Parade, just standing together, laughing, and enjoying the moment in our pink and green. She loved Winchester, and Winchester was very lucky to have her for so many years.

She was always making things from scratch. Homemade applesauce and jam kept in mason jars. Mason jars will always remind me of her. On holidays she worked nonstop in the kitchen. Thanksgiving and Christmas meant everything was homemade, and she never stopped until everyone was taken care of. Holidays always felt bigger because of her.

She had the best sense of style-especially her holiday turtlenecks. She must have had one for every occasion. I used to joke that I´d have her closet someday since we were the same size. She was my tiny twin.

My cousins and I were incredibly lucky to have her as our grandmother. I´ll always think of her with a smile, and I like to picture her now, finally at peace, dancing in her ballet shoes. I´ll miss her forever and I´ll carry her with me always.

If you were lucky enough to know my grandmother please leave a message letting us know of any fond memories you may have!

Your mom was truly a dedicated Christian. She was wonderful neighbor on Ridge Ave. Many of us on Ridge have gone our separate ways but she is remembered fondly by so many.
