Sylvanus “Syl” Rome, age 86, of St. Peter, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, on the family farm in St. Peter, Kansas. He was born on October 16, 1939, in Quinter, Kansas to Bernard and Magdalena (Kaiser) Rome. Syl married Firma Jean “Jeannie” Rupp on July 15, 1961, and they shared many wonderful years together before her passing on August 20, 2020.
A lifelong farmer and stockman, Syl devoted himself fully to the land and livestock he loved, rarely taking a day off. He also worked as a driller in the oil field, a career he continued until his 77th birthday. He was a proud member of Christ the King Catholic Church – WaKeeney and the Ellis Knights of Columbus, attaining both the 3rd and 4th degree. Syl also served his community as a US Army Veteran as well as fire chief of the Rural St. Peter Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years.
Known for his skill as a mechanic and his love of polka dancing, Syl will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, dedication to others, and the joy he brought to those around him.
He is survived by his children: James (Sandy) Rome of Ellis, and Lucinda Smith of Alma, NE. His sister: Martha Rome of Iowa City, IA. Grandchildren: Jenna Smith, Justin Smith, Nathaniel (Brittany) Hulse, Hannah Hulse, Lexie (Avery) Hawkins, Alyssa Rome, and 8 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents, his wife, daughter: Malinda Deel; son: Dennis Rome; and a great-grandson: Dexter Hulse.
Funeral services will be 12:30 PM Saturday, December 13, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery with Military Honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Friday 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7:00 PM. Saturday visitation will be 11:00 AM until service time all at St. Mary's Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: St. Mary's Church and/or Masses in care of the funeral chapel.
