Sylvester Cooks, 81 years old, of Appling, Georgia passed away on June 1, 2023 in North Augusta, S.C.
Sylvester was born in Copeland, Florida to Bessie Lee and Will Cooks on August 22, 1941. He went to Mays High School in Goulds, Florida. He married Romell Cooks of Tucson, Arizona.
He served 24 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant holding the position of Aircraft Propulsion Superintendent. He also held the position of Plant Manager for 26 years at ATCO Rubber Products. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was a dedicated stamp collector for many years, a talented wood worker and an excellent cake baker.
Sylvester is preceded in death by his grandmother, Annie Byrd; mother, Bessie Lee Cooks; father, Will Cooks, Sr.; brother, Will Cooks, Jr. and sister, Almetta Barnes.
Sylvester is survived by wife, Romell Cooks; sons, Robert Cooks (Sara), Eddie Cooks (Tara); brothers, Thaddeus Moss (Gloria), Bobby Barnes (Frances), Abraham Moss (Diane); and sisters, Edith Jernigan (Harry), Annie Edwards (Eulie), Betty Bennett, Sylvia Charlton (Gentry) and Juanita Barnes; grandchildren, Brandon Cooks, Cali Cooks, Dallas Cooks, King Cooks, Drew Cooks; great-granddaughter, Madison Cooks and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind his wonderful little schnauzer, Coco Chanel.
The family of Sylvester Cooks wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Houman Tammadon, the VA Hospital staff, Pruitt Nursing Home, Linda Lee, and Solid Rock Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., June 16 at Platt's Funeral Home, 337 N. Belair Road, Evans, Georgia.. Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC. Repast at 3:30 at Platt's Reception Hall.
