Sylvester was born April 18, 1931 in a one room cabin on the banks of Jack Fork Creek, Weathers, OK to Nathaniel "Spain" Moore and Evelyn " Dutchie" Anderson Moore. Sylvester was the eldest of the 7 Moore children. Sylvester was the maternal grandson of Charlie and Jincy Clay Anderson, and paternal grandson of Jonas and Katy Mckintubbee Moore. Sylvester, loved his upbringing and way of life growing up as a proud Choctaw on his grandmother Katy's allotment. Now the location of Sardis Baptist Church on Savage Highway in Pittsburgh County. Sylvester worked many of his young years helping his Mom and Dad raise vegetables and peanuts and tending free range livestock including his buddy Mert a long haired nanny goat. At age 10 Sylvester got a "paying" job skidding logs off the mountain for his Uncle Buck Anderson. Sylvester went to school at Lone Star, Weathers, and North Elementary School in Hartshorne before entering Haskell Institute in Lawrence,KS Soon after graduation, Uncle Sam called Sylvester to serve in his Army. He served his full 2 years operating an overhead crane In Engrandes, France. Sylvester would spend the next 26 years operating an over head crane in Houston, TX for AK Steel. Sylvester married Helen Louise Taylor and adopted Helen's daughter Elinda Lee and the three Moores' would shared many good times hunting and fishing and swimming in Lake Houston. The family was active in Harvest Time Revival Center and shared a happy life in Houston until his early retirement and were able to return to his beloved Oklahoma where Sylvester and Helen would build a cabin together on their 40-acre on Honobia Mountain and live the good life. The couple hosted many a holiday meal, camp outs and dinners for family and friends in their cabin. Being a man who enjoyed being busy Sylvester joined the staff at Jones Academy helping kids raise their show pigs. Due to Helen being ill it was necessary to be closer to medical care in Talihina so with help from the Choctaw's they built a Choctaw home. Sylvester would lose Helen to cancer in 1999 Sylvester would continue staying busy raising horses and chickens and would even build a 50x20 barn using repurposted material by himself. Sylvester was active in the Choctaw Community serving as President of the Sr. Center, Sergent at Arms for the Choctaw Council, Board member of the Hospital, the IRB and the Ethics Committee. He also served as a Board Member on the Kiamichi Housing Board. Sylvester was a Dominoes/Checker Champion for many years at the Labor Festival. Sylvester married Teddi Irwin in 2015 and the two would continue a busy life, managing trips for the Seniors of District 3, Creating SE Oklahoma Barn Quilt Trail, and teaching people self sustainable agricultural techniques including rainwater harvesting, raised bed gardening and pollinator conservation.
Sylvester is survived by wife Teddi of the home; granddaughters, Jessica Moore of McAlester, Jennifer of Baton Rouge Louisiana; great grand daughter, Jaleed Cagle and husband Gary of Durant; great grand sons, Jeffery and Jaydee Holcomb and wife Kyrstyn of Talihina OK; brother, Joseph of Fort Smith, AR; sister, Carol Posten of Peoria, Illinois and Glenda Adkins of Talihina; Stepsons, Jeffery of Dale and Gregory of Kyle, and by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends
Sylvester was predeceased by a brother Thurmom of Fort Smith, AR, and brother Nathaniel "Pete" of McAlester.
Viewing and visitation will be held Sunday, December 22nd from 4:00PM to 6:00 PM at McCarn Funeral home in Talihina Services will be held on Monday, December 23rd, at 10:00 AM at the Choctaw Chapel in Tuskahoma with Bro, Stephen Jeffcoat, Bro. Marty Potts, and Jennifer Woods officiating. Interment will follow at the Choctaw Veterans Cemetery. Services haven been entrusted to McCarn Funeral Service.
