Obituary

Sylvia Annette Matthiesen

May 11, 1941 – September 9, 2025

Sylvia Annette Matthiesen, age 84, passed away on September 9, 2025 at her home in Worland, Wyoming. Born on May 11, 1941, in Big Springs, Nebraska, Sylvia was the beloved daughter of Edwin and Dorothy (Miller) Berges.

Sylvia was a proud graduate of Worland High School, Class of 1959. Shortly after graduation she married her high school sweetheart, James Herbert Matthiesen. Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and devotion to family. James preceded her in death in 2019.

Sylvia's life was marked by her strong work ethic and dedication to those around her. She spent a decade working as a secretary at Admiral Beverage (Pepsi). She continued her career at Crown, Cork and Seal, where she worked in quality control and eventually making her way up to a printer mechanic.

Above all, Sylvia was a devoted mother to her three sons: Jimmy, John, and Bob. She was fiercely proud of her family and found her greatest joy in the time they spent together. Sylvia was also a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, roles she treasured deeply. Her family was the heart of her life, and she took immense pride in their lives and accomplishments.

Outside of work and family, Sylvia was a woman of many passions. She was an accomplished pianist, and her love of music was a source of comfort and expression throughout her life. As an avid outdoorswoman, she enjoyed both fishing and hunting-a reflection of her independent spirit and connection to nature. Sylvia was a woman of tremendous faith and she grew spiritually daily through her devotions and she could often be found watching the Joseph Prince Show. Sylvia will be remembered for her strength, kindness, resilience, and the deep love she held for her family.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; stepbrother Bud Dewitt; stepsisters, Cindy Jasperson and Dee Dalke; and grandson, Kaleb Matthiesen.

She is survived by her children, Jimmy Matthiesen of Las Vegas, Nevada, John Matthiesen of Los Angeles, California, and Robert Matthieson (Candy) of Worland, Wyoming; grandson, Curry Matthiesen of Aurora, Colorado; greatgrandchildren, (children of Kaleb): Lukas, Ryeleigh, Kaden, Felix (Children of Curry): Serenity, Kennedy, Josiah, Kiser; nieces, Tracy, Sheila; nephews, Marvin, Mike, Bobby, David, Rick

Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Jim and Sylvia's honor on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 11:00AM at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Worland, Wyoming, with a carry-in reception to follow in the church hall. All who knew Sylvia are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of this remarkable woman.
