Sylvia Tashman, age 96, passed away on October 20, 2023. She was born on April 7, 1927, in Philadelphia to parents Morris and Ethel Gordon. Sylvia married Martin Tashman (pre-deceased 2000), on August 22, 1948.
She is survived by her son Rick Tashman and her daughter in-law Cynthia Moskow, granddaughter Heather Fritts and her husband Doug Fritts, great-granddaughter Avery Fritts, and great-grandson Chase Fritts.
Sylvia graduated South Philadelphia High School for Girls and was awarded a full scholarship to a college of her choice. In 1947, Sylvia graduated the University of Pennsylvania, with a B.A. in Microbiology and inducted as a member of the Phi Betta Kappa Society, America’s most prestigious academic honor society. She continued her education while teaching and earned her Master’s degree.
Prior to teaching math and science, Sylvia worked as a Microbiologist in a research laboratory at Albert Einstein Medical Center and CHOP. Her published research studies included endocarditis and studies on the absorption factors for medications.
Sylvia taught at Northeast High School, Ogontz Junior High, and Cheltenham High School. An academic scholarship was created in her honor.
Sylvia and Marty were very active as volunteers in the Jewish War Veterans and Gratz College Yiddish Club. They were active members of the Philadelphia Art Museum and Academy of Music. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in her honor to the Jewish War Veterans, Drizin Weiss Post, 913 Tyson Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19111 or the 2023 Israel Emergency Fund
