Tamarra "Tammy" J. Nielsen, 78, Marion, went to be with her beloved husband, George, at 2:28 am on Monday, June 13, 2022, at Marion Health. She was born in Marion, Indiana, on Monday, March 20, 1944, to Robert and Minniellen (Sims) Kirby. On July 8, 1972, she married George E. Nielsen, and he preceded her in death.
Tammy graduated from Marion High School and attended Ivy Tech Community College. She worked at RCA for 30 years and was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Tammy enjoyed time spent with her kids and grandkids. She was a lifelong learner, who liked anything that had to do with learning, including game shows. One of her greatest joys and accomplishments in life was tutoring people at shelters to help them get their GEDs. She also loved to read and work puzzles. She enjoyed music, loved hummingbirds, and was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include her daughters, Elise R. McWhorter of Marion, Jeri Diane Hewitt of Chuckey, TN, and Mindy J. (Chad) Thurman of New Braunfels, TX; grandsons, Joseph Liechty, Brian Hewitt, Corey Hewitt, Nathan Thurman, Arron Thurman, and Jacob Thurman; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert L. (Georgia) Kirby and Charles L. (Rhonda) Kirby; sister, Sharon (Donald) Rook; and bonus daughters, Courtney Martin, Whitney Cook, Kerri Bittner, and Lydia Ballenger.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
The family will receive visitors from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, a funeral service to celebrate Tammy's life will take place at the funeral home at 11:30 am. Pastor Tom Mansbarger will be officiating with burial following at Marion National Cemetery.
