Teresa Marie Thacker Haskin

Yorktown, Va. – Teresa Marie Thacker Haskin, 63, of Yorktown, Virginia, passed peacefully on the morning of Saturday, February 28th, surrounded by family in her home.

She spent her time on Earth creating joy, educating children, and fostering meaningful connections with everyone she met.

She created a legacy that will be cherished by everyone lucky enough to know her.Teresa took pride in maintaining a home in which everyone felt welcome – where the scent of her world-famous fresh-baked cookies greeted you at the doorway, paired with the sounds of funk, Dave Matthews, or unseasonably early Christmas music. And when music played, she smiled and danced.

Teresa was born on December 5th, 1962, in Newport News, Virginia. Described by many as a "brainiac," she graduated as salutatorian from Tabb High School ('80) before attending James Madison University (JMU), where she was a proud flautist with the JMU Marching Royal Dukes. She attained her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education ('84) from JMU, and later her Master of Arts in Teaching from Christopher Newport University ('99). In 1986, Teresa met David Haskin, and they were inseparable from that moment onwards. They were married in 1987 and began their family, raising their seven children just down the street from where she grew up, along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

Teresa was a proud educator. She served as an English teacher at Yorktown Middle School and later as a kindergarten teacher at Grace Episcopal Day School. She also homeschooled four of her own children and tutored several others. Former students would regularly approach her to sing praises about the positive impact she had on their education.

Combining her passion for education with her love for music, she served as the fife instructor for the Fifes and Drums of York Town from 2004 to 2014. During the summer, she could often be seen dressed in colonial garb, marching alongside the corps in historic Yorktown.

A woman of faith, she was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and had previously attended Grace Episcopal Church, maintaining many close friendships across both parishes.

She loved an outdoor shower. She loved shelling and sunbathing ("turtling"). She loved big festive earrings. She loved baking for family and friends. She loved a full and boisterous home. She loved rereading her favorite books annually. She loved decorating for every holiday. And if she met you, she loved you, too.

She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, David; her children, whom she adored: Trace, Nicholas (Paige), Ian (Nicky), Claire, Rebekah, Zhen, and Michael; her father, Bobby (Cathy) Thacker; her brothers, Scott (Ellen) Thacker and Brian (Laurie) Thacker; her lifelong best friend, Sandy (Mike) Mills; and many beloved family members and friends.

She was predeceased by her mother, Sandra (Sonny) Forbes.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 118 Old York-Hampton Hwy, Yorktown, VA 23692, on Saturday, March 21, at 2 pm.

Teresa was my next door neighbor when we lived on Hodges Cove Road. I remember her fondly. She was a great friend to my mother Laura and was often around to lend a helping hand. She was a funny, vivacious soul. My condolences to the Thacker family, Bobby, Scott and Brian.

Teresa and I were colleagues before York became a middle school but most of all we were friends! She was the type of friend you could laugh so hard with that you would both end up in tears gasping for air! When David and Teresa started dating we knew something special was happening! Not only was she an amazing teacher, she was also a great story teller! Our children were so fortunate to have her at YMS when they were there! Her smile, hugs, greetings and laughter were contagious to all because they made both students and adults smile a little bit more!!

Mrs Thacker was one of my all time favorite teachers. I had her as an English teacher at Yorktown Intermediate. She believed in her students in a way that made them feel like they could accomplish anything! She wasn´t like any teacher I had ever had before, she was different.. she was special. I´ve always remembered how she told me I had a real gift for writing. I remember seeing her years ago and telling her that she was one of the reasons I became a teacher. Her face just lit up when I told her that. I´m so grateful for her influence on my life. She will be missed!

I am so incredibly sad to read this news. Teresa was a beautiful soul, inside and out. Her laugh was infectious. She made everyone feel better about themselves, just with her salutation of "Hello, beautiful." While we knew each other from school, our most precious times were spent in our young adulthood, when we worked with the Summer Fun Program. Acting as human buoys at Sandbridge, managing all the kids at Water Country, teaching many to swim (or at least tread water) at my mom and dad´s pool, and dancing the night away at a club. She loved her family with her whole heart, giving of herself every day.
Heaven is a better place with Teresa there...and I will cherish our memories until I see her again.

Teresa had a beautiful and genuine soul. She and her family had a huge positive impact on my son Willis. We were blessed to have met and shared time with her and her family during the years that Willis was in the Yorktown Fife and Drum Corps and she continued to show him support into his time in the USMC.
Heaven gained a beautiful angel. She's a perfect example of what this world needs more of!
Prayers to the family for peace, strength and comfort.

Teresa Haskin was among the very best teachers with whom I worked during my twenty three years as a principal. She was very well suited for dealing with younger teenagers. She was witty and could adapt to fit their zaniness into her classroom goals. She loved her kids.
She was a leader in the school, a friend to many during times of struggle, an advocate for kids, and a talented role model to many. She was very well liked, confident in her beliefs, and had a very inviting smile.
Teresa made a difference. I´m lucky to have gotten to know her so well. She meant a lot to me. Ed Holler

The Born Family

I knew Mrs. Haskin through The Fifes and Drums of Yorktown because my kids were members. I have many memories, but one in particular occurred when we were on a summer trip and I was a parent chaperone. We had just gathered all the fifers and drummers on the bus to head to a performance when Mrs. Haskin stepped up onto the bus, greeted everyone good morning, then added that her good morning would not be complete until one particular drummer (her son) gave her a good morning kiss. Well, you can imagine the friendly laughter and teasing coming from a bus full of teens, but without hesitation, her son leapt up with enthusiasm from his seat in the back of the bus, sauntered down the aisle with a brilliantly bright smile (and red face), and planted a huge kiss on his mother's cheek followed by a bear hug. The bus erupted with cheers!

Our hearts share your sorrow, but we also celebrate the love that you shared as a family; a love that will sustain you through these difficult times and bring many happy memories in the future.

We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
