"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn." – Isaiah 54:17 (Teresa's Favorite Scripture)
Our hearts were saddened by the passing of our dear loved one, Teresa Ann Jackson Shands, at the age of 64. She was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at the Woodbine Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Alexandria, VA.
Teresa was affectionately called "Tina" by her family, friends and classmates. She lived a vibrant life and wore a beautiful smile that would light up any room she entered. She was light on her feet and loved to dance. Teresa had a big heart, loved her family dearly and was known for always blessing others with gifts of love. When she traveled to Petersburg to visit family, she would have large bags of gifts loaded in the trunk of her car to give to her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She lived life to the fullest and didn't let any grass grow under her feet.
A native of Petersburg, Teresa was the daughter of Ophelia Bland Jackson and the late Herley R. Jackson, Sr. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior at First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg. Teresa later transferred her membership to Metropolitan Baptist Church, Petersburg, where her cousin pastored and where she could worship and fellowship with her mother. Teresa knew the importance of having a church home at all times so upon relocating to Maryland, she joined First Baptist Church of Highland Park, Maryland. She was a devoted Christian and loved the Lord. She dedicated her time and service to supporting many church activities in Petersburg and in Maryland.
Teresa attended Petersburg Public Schools and was a 1978 graduate of Petersburg High School. While in high school, she served as a flag girl and was great at her movements and flag manipulation. She also attended John Tyler Community College, now known as Brightpoint Community College.
Shortly after entering college, Teresa was offered an opportunity to begin a career with the government. She was employed by the Department of Defense at Bellwood where she worked in the shipping and receiving department. Teresa did not hesitate to move where her job took her. She worked for the government in Newport News and her last employment was in Maryland with Walter Reed Institute of Research in Logistics. Due to declining health conditions, Teresa's career with the government ended with 30 years of service.
The love of Teresa's life was her daughter, Wke'Chan. Teresa made every effort to give her daughter worthwhile exposure and experiences that left forever lasting precious memories. One of Teresa's annual activities was to participate with her daughter in the Evangel Cathedral Christmas Celebration in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Teresa and Wke'Chan auditioned for and danced in this festive play for 6 years. During this time, Teresa's mother chartered buses for community members in the surrounding areas of Petersburg to travel to Maryland to see her daughter and granddaughter perform in the Christmas plays. Teresa's last performance was in the 2018 Christmas Celebration and she fell sick not long after which was in February 2019.
Teresa was preceded in death by a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and two sisters-in-law.
Left to cherish her memories in addition to her mother, Ophelia Bland Jackson, are: her "Pride and Joy," Wke'Chan Jackson and her grandson, Kamari Webb, both of Washington, DC.; two brothers, Herley, Jr. and Michael Jackson; one nephew, Herley, III (Lakeii); one niece, Rashaunda Jackson-Lanier (Tracy); a niece-in-love, Joyner Mines (Fontel); great nieces and great nephews, Saniyah, Trejhon, Jabari, Herley, IV, Maddox, Lexan and Lowyn; an uncle, Eugene Bland and an aunt, Lillian B. Webster; one godson, Jervon Walton; a host of cousins, other relatives and many friends, among the friends, Marvette McKensie and Lynne Shields.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff at Woodbine Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Alexandria, VA for the compassionate care given to their loved one during her stay at the center.
