Terrence McCarthy Obituary

Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather

LOWELL

Terrence J. "Terry" McCarthy, the beloved husband of Kathleen (O'Donnell) McCarthy passed away unexpectedly at his home, following a brief illness. He was 75 years old.

Born in Lowell on June 26, 1945, Terry was a son of the late James P. and Viola B. (Muldoon) McCarthy.

He attended the Immaculate Conception Grammar School and graduated from Lowell High School. Terry went on to receive a Degree from Lowell Technological Institute, now UMass Lowell.

A strong work ethic was instilled in Terry from a very early age through the family business, James P. McCarthy & Sons. In his early life, he worked at the Lakeview Amusement Park and later Tewksbury State Hospital. For years he worked in the funeral business for Jack McNamee and Frank McCabe.

For 35 years, Terry was employed by the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department, starting out at Billerica House of Correction and retiring as the Superintendent of the Cambridge Jail.

In his retirement, Terry, along with his partners Tom McKay and Leo Creegan, formed Mill City Management, the company that operated the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. "The Three Amigos" had a very successful 18 year run bringing top rate entertainment to Lowell.

Terry had many passions. First and foremost was his love for his family. His wife, three children, and three grandchildren always took center stage. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and adoring grandfather. His grandkids were his pride and joy. He loved attending their sporting events and was always there for their milestones and achievements.

Terry's roots ran deep in Lowell. He was born and bred for the city he loved. His civic involvement was second to none. It is hard to find a charitable endeavor in the City of Lowell that Terry's fingerprint was not on. As Chairman of the Lowell Sun Charities, he helped to make Christmas happen for so many, whom otherwise would not have had one. He was a member of the Lowell License Commission, a position he took very seriously, always ruling in the best interest of the citizens of Lowell. He served on numerous charitable boards and was involved in many fundraising golf tournaments.

For many years, Terry served on the board of the Washington Savings Bank. He was also a member of the "Wednesday Night Boat Crew" and Long Meadow Golf Club. Among the many civic and community recognitions Terry received throughout his life, The Lowell Catholic High School's Bishop McNamara Award and the Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen's Award were especially dear to his heart.

Terry also enjoyed landscaping around his yards at the Abby, up at Goose Rocks, Maine, and at Building Blocks Pre School.

Terry enjoyed traveling with his family and with his many friends. Trips to the casinos with the guys were a favorite of his. His friends were a huge part of his life. Like second family to him, they were always around and he always loved being in their company.

Terry's Faith in God and His Church was instilled in him from a very early age at the Immaculate Conception Parish. As a young Parochial School student and Altar Boy, Terry developed a respect for the clergy and for his Catholic Faith. Throughout his whole life he gave of his time, talent, and resources to his parish.

He was a daily Communicant in the Rectory Chapel for many years. Terry served as a member of the Building Committee, The Parish Golf Tournament Committee, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. In addition he was a counter of the weekly offertory collections, as well as anything else that was asked of him. He was a very dear friend of his Pastor, Rev. Nick Sannella.

Terry McCarthy was a man of Family, Faith, and Community.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Kathleen; his two sons, Sean and Karen McCarthy of Ridgewood, NJ, and T.J. McCarthy and Mary Beth Kazanjian of Lowell; his daughter Patty McCarthy of Boston; and his three grandchildren, Annie, Katie, and Sean McCarthy of Ridgewood, NJ.

Terry was the brother of the late James, Edward, and Patrick McCarthy.

Terry was a wonderful part of our family always there for any of us that needed him. He will always be in my heart. Memories of his smile and laugh will make me smile. “ May the road rise with you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, may the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may the Lord hold you in the hollow of His hand”.
