Terry Richard
September 4, 1972 – March 31, 2025
Terrence ("Terry") William Richard, 52, died Monday, March 31, 2025, unexpectedly but peacefully at the home in
Broomfield, Colorado he shared with his wife, Julie Kehrer, and their two dogs, Darby and Winnie.
Born September 4, 1972, in Nashua, New Hampshire, Terry was the son of Raymond ("Ray") Wayne Richard and Marguerite ("Meg") (Perrault) Richard. Terry had an older brother, Christian ("Chris") Richard (Leslie Murphy).
Terry grew up in the Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro, New Hampshire area, where he spent many summers riding his bike down country roads and enjoying the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee. He and Meg relocated to Lewistown, Montana in the summer of 1989 to be closer to Terry's aunts and uncle, Pat, Wally and Melissa. Terry graduated from Fergus County High School in 1991, with honors, alongside his best friend, Chad Sciuchetti.
Terry then relocated to Denver, Colorado, where he attended Denver Institute of Technology and graduated in December 1992 with an Associates of Applied Science in Mechanical Drafting. He was an avid member of the Colorado SHO Club for some time and made many lifelong friends who shared his love of cars.
Terry worked various jobs in mechanical drafting and then began a wonderfully fulfilling 26-year career with Golden Railings, Inc., owned by Bill and Katie Adams. After Bill's retirement, Terry helped run the company as General Manager, along with their son and daughter, Austin (Lindsay) Adams and Ashleigh (Mark) Moskovics. Terry was more than just an employee to the Adams' – Terry always felt a part of their extended family, and through their abundant warmth, kindness, generosity, and love through the years, the Adams' truly embraced Terry as a son and big brother. Terry was proud to be a part of Golden Railings and the Adams Family and that pride, gratitude and love for Golden Railings and the Adams' will live on through Terry's family forever.
In 1994, Terry met Kristie Higa, and together, they brightened this world with the January 15, 1997 birth of their beautifully spirited daughter, Sydnee Higa Richard. Terry and Kristie raised Sydnee in love and friendship, a true and close bond that continued until his death.
Sydnee was the joy of Terry's life, and there was nothing he wouldn't do to make sure she knew she was safe and loved. He was incredibly proud of the caring, quirky, and strong woman that she is and was overjoyed when Josh Thompson asked him for her hand in marriage in August 2023. It didn't seem possible, but Terry's capacity to love grew ten times the day his grandson, Walker Ken Higa Thompson, came into the world on June 30, 2024.
Terry loved spending time with Walker, holding him, playing with him, reading to him and rocking him to sleep. As Walker grows, he will know how much his Grampie loved him.
Unbeknownst to him at the time, Terry met his soulmate, Julie Ann Kehrer, in March 2010, when Terry and Julie attended a dog training class at Sit Means Sit in Westminster, Colorado, with their dogs, Addy and Sadie. During classes in the ensuing weeks, Terry paid much more attention to Sadie than Julie, but Terry eventually caught on to Julie's interest and asked her on their first date to an air show on August 28, 2010. Almost two years later, on August 25, 2012, at the same annual air show, they became engaged and were later married on September 7, 2014.
Terry loved his wife and demonstrated it every single day in a million tiny and not so tiny ways. He took care of her in every way possible, he cherished her, he soothed her deepest fears and kept her darkest secrets, he was a safe haven when she needed a place to rest, and he was her biggest cheerleader when there were things to celebrate. Their love was the kind that really only exists in myths and fairytales. The quiet, special moments that they shared between only the two of them will forever be locked safe inside her heart.
Terry loved spending time with his family – and his family extended beyond blood. Terry and Julie hosted Family Game Nights where Sydnee, Josh, Walker, Josh's parents (Derrick and Cheryl Thomspon), Josh's brother (Nate Thompson and Aspen Sutton), Sydnee's mom and sister (Kristie and Maddie Higa), Julie's nephew (Jake Silveira), and Julie's best friend (Lori Vaughn) were present. These were precious family times where countless memories were made and will be cherished.
Terry was a special human. He loved and cared deeply for so many people – and the way he showed that love was through acts of service. If someone he knew – or sometimes someone he didn't even know – needed something, Terry was the first person to jump in and do whatever needed to be done – and then some. He was constantly thinking of how to make others feel seen and loved. He would often hand-make small things like personalized engraved water bottles for the kids next door, special engraved necklaces for a friend celebrating a special milestone, and pumpkin bread that he hand-delivered to friends and neighbors every Christmas. It didn't matter who it was or how far out of his way he had to go, Terry was always there without hesitation or question. The most special part about all of this is that he never expected or asked for anything in return. Terry's care, friendship and love were unconditional, without strings and without end.
Terry loved the outdoors and had a deep love of bicycling from the time he was a young boy. This continued into adulthood where he would go on 60-mile rides with Julie and their two
dogs, Darby and Winnie, in tow. He loved the sun on his face and the wind passing by, and the freedom and childlike joy that came from having an adventure on his bike.
Terry was extraordinarily intelligent and was a highly skilled mechanic, carpenter, craftsman and tinkerer. He renovated homes, worked on cars, and could build or fix just about anything. He was a lifelong learner, filled with endless knowledge of so many topics, often fondly teased by his family as an Encyclopedia of Random Knowledge. This sometimes did not apply to math problems, as his family also lovingly teased him for his unique brand of Terry Math.
To say that Terry loved the music of Dave Matthews Band (DMB) would be a severe understatement – he found deep meaning and memories in so many of their songs, particularly "Old Dirt Hill" and "Loving Wings." He and Julie attended 33 DMB shows together in the last 12 years. They traveled all over to see the Band, including Mexico and most notably to see them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in October 2024. Along the way, Terry met and talked with hundreds, and maybe thousands, of fellow DMB fans. He loved spending hours waiting in the poster line making friends and sharing stories, memories and laughs. He also loved handing out bracelets Julie made to friends and strangers alike at all the DMB shows, and so many in the DMB Community remember him for his friendliness, kindness, generosity and positivity. Through their love of DMB, Terry and Julie made some truly incredible friends who will help keep Terry's legacy and memory alive within the DMB Community.
Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Meg Richard, his father-in-law, Ken Kehrer, his aunt and uncle, Pat and Wally Schultz, his uncle, Jim Richard, and his beloved dogs, Addy and Sadie.
Terry is survived by his wife, Julie Kehrer, his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, Sydnee Richard, Josh Thompson and Walker Thompson, his father, Ray Richard, his brother and sister-in-law, Chris Richard and Leslie Murphy, his aunts, Melissa Bell and Jinny (John) Van Haelen, his uncle David (Jean) Richard, and many other family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who will miss him dearly and love him forever.
