Obituary of TERRI PETIT DRAD
HELEN CHERWONUK/TERRI SARENCHUK PETIT-DRAD
"TERRI LAYNE"
Peacefully on June 2, 2023 Helen Cherwonuk/Terri Sarenchuk Petit-Drad, stage name Terri Layne passed away with her daughter Sheri and son-in-law Toby by her side.
Terri is predeceased by her mother, father, sister Mary, brothers Eddie and Walter, Husbands Terry, Lou and Frank, and granddaughter Celina.
Terri leaves to mourn her daughter Sheri (Toby) Slater, son Fern (Jeannine) Petit, grandchildren Steph, Zach, Daniel (Tamara), great-granddaughter Zoey, nieces and nephews Ellen (Steven), Marilyn, Nancy (Rick), Guy, Darren, dear friend Jim and life long friend Sheila and many other dear friends and family that blessed her life.
Terri was very athletic in her younger years and played women's fastball for E.K. and at nineteen was drafted as a star player to CUAC (Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club), one of the best teams in Canada at the time.
At twenty-one Terri became a hairdresser and started her own business above Ringer's Drugs Next Door to a young lawyer Bill Norrie who became one of Winnipeg's finest mayors. She became well respected in the industry and did the hair of notables like singer Juliet. She also became a make-up artist for CBC where she started to rub shoulders with other music industry greats like Tommy Hunter and Robert Goulet and her signing career began to take off. While there she met James Duncan, director of the Hollow Mug where she performed and sang for many years. She also entertained and sang in many nightclubs across Canada for many years. Terri was also known for her warm outgoing personality and great sense of humor. She "retired" in Ile des Chenes where she married Lou Petit and helped him run his gravel business and opened and ran a gift shop, Petit Four for twenty years. She was also the reporter/writer of the town newspaper, The Carillon News and then as if all that didn't keep her busy enough, she found it in her heart to adopt two children in 1977, Fern and Sheri who completed her world. It is no surprise that in later years she received Governor General's Award for outstanding community service in Ile des Chenes for always being available to help her community when most people wouldn't. In 1997 she joined the infamous singing group The Sister's of the Holy Rock and so appreciated all the love and companionship of this close group.
Family was always very important to mom and she was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. Mom was always grateful to God for all the many blessings and gifts she had in her lifetime. Mom has had many rescue animals.
In lieu of flowers please donate to Little Red Barn Micro Sanctuary or Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Center or Darcy's A.R.C.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.
