Terry Griffin

Terry P. Griffin, 78, of Yulee, Florida, passed away on February 19, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones after a short illness.

Born in 1947 in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Perry and Retha Griffin, Terry grew up working alongside his father, installing audio systems for local schools and organizations. A 1965 graduate of Little Rock Central High School, he went on to earn his Bachelor's in Political Science and Public Administration from Henderson State University.

Terry dedicated his life to public safety and service. He spent 2 years in the U.S. Navy after high school. He then began his career with the Nassau County Sheriff's Office (1972-1976) and the Fernandina Beach Police Department (1976-1979). In 1979, he was appointed Nassau County Civil Defense Director and made history in 1984 as the county's first paid Fire Chief, successfully consolidating all public safety departments.

In 1986, Terry transitioned to federal service with the U.S. Navy at NSB Kings Bay, serving as a Disaster Preparedness Specialist, Deputy Security Officer, and Emergency Manager for Submarine Group Ten. He later became the Regional Emergency Manager for Navy Region Southeast, overseeing 22 Navy installations until his retirement in 2007. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police at the H.J. Youngblood Lodge #65.

Beyond his professional achievements, Terry was defined by his love for Jesus Christ, his family, and his community. An active member of Memorial United Methodist Church, he served the congregation in many capacities. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, completing their goal of visiting all major league baseball parks. He also spent time volunteering with Barnabas Center, Inc., spending quiet afternoons listening to music by the pool, and enjoying time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Jean Pittman Griffin; his daughter, Ashley Bower (Jason); grandchildren, Tyler and Megan Hughes; and his brother, Robert Griffin, along with many cousins and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Retha Griffin.

A service to celebrate Terry's life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 3pm with visitation at 2pm, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Memorial United Methodist Church or Barnabas Center, Inc.
