Lois Thornton

Lois Thompson Thornton, 86, of Fernandina Beach passed away on February 22nd, 2026 peacefully at her home.
She was born February 25, 1939 in Screven, Georgia to the late John Thompson and Lilly Googe Thompson. She grew up in Jesup, GA.
At 16, while working in a bakery, she met the love of her life, Billy Milton Thornton. They married on June 19, 1955 and then raised 5 children together. Her children remember her as a kind, loving, patient mom who always encouraged them to reach their goals in life.
Lois was a skilled seamstress that loved to sew for everyone. She made most of her family's wedding dresses and clothes. She was so passionate about sewing, she worked in a sewing factory during the day and would come home and sew most of her family's clothes. She was also a great gardener, growing most of her family's veggies.
Although she loved being a wife and mother, her most favorite title was Nana, to her grandkids and great grandkids, whom she loved with all her heart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy, and three of her children, Shirley Woodard, and Billy and Daniel Thornton.
She is survived by her son and daughter- in- law, John and Deborah Thornton, daughter, Marie Winkler, and daughter-in-law Renee Thornton along with 20 grandkids, 21 great-grandkids, and 7 great-great grandkids.
The family will receive family and friends on Monday, March 2, 2026 from 5-7p.m. at Oxley Heard Funeral Home. Services will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 11a.m. in Burgess Chapel at Oxley Heard. Lois will be laid to rest at Green Pine Cemetery in Yulee, Florida.
