Rhinebeck, NY – Theresa R. Manikowski, "Terry," 91, passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2025.
Born in Washington, DC, on August 28, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Loretta Mullikin Robey and Hugh B. Robey. After the passing of her mother, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Dorothea and Raymond Neudecker, from the age of five.
Terry attended Dunbarton College in Washington, DC. Upon graduation in 1955, she married Paul R. Manikowski, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate (they later divorced), and together they raised six children. When Paul left the Navy to work for IBM, the family moved to Los Angeles, CA, in 1960, where they continued to grow. Later, they relocated to Ridgefield, CT, where Terry became an active member of Planned Parenthood, the League of Women Voters and was the only woman appointed by the Ridgefield Board of Selectpersons to serve on the Town Charter Revision Committee.
A devoted mother, Terry passionately embraced parenthood, always present at her children's sports and artistic endeavors, their greatest fan and advocate. It was during her time in Ridgefield that she also discovered her love of painting, a pursuit that would become one of her life's great passions.
In 1975 the family moved to Atlanta, GA, where Terry continued painting while also working full time in real estate, first as a successful agent and later joining the Relocation Team at Northside Realty. After retiring from real estate, she managed the Atlanta Artist Center Gallery, further immersing herself in the art community.
In 2020, Terry moved to
Rhinebeck, NY, to be closer to her children and reconnect with her Northeast roots.
A gifted artist, Terry often referred to painting as her lifelong companion, finding inspiration in nature, particularly the Grand Canyon, the Teton Mountains, and, later, the Hudson Valley. A passionate Yankees fan and devoted follower of college basketball, she was also a staunch Democrat, never shy about voicing her political views. She found joy in filling her home with vibrant flowers, always surrounding herself with fresh blooms. Above all, she cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and dear friends, sharing stories, songs, and laughter over a glass of wine.
Terry was preceded in death by her beloved sons, Eric J. Manikowski (2010), Christopher M. Manikowski (2022), and Michael P. Manikowski (2023). She is survived by her children, Paula S. Manikowski of New York, NY; Raymond Manikowski and his wife, Theresa Hackett, of New York, NY; Kathleen Manikowski of New York, NY, and Clinton Corners, NY, her sister, Catherine Anne Parkhurst, of Hammonton, NJ. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Manikowski and her husband, Ryan Whitten, of Lilburn, GA; Tommy Manikowski of Conyers, GA; Jace K. Manikowski of New York, NY; and Hannah Manikowski of Los Angeles, CA.
A Celebration of Theresa's Life & Art will be held in Rhinebeck for family & friends surrounded by her beloved paintings. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hudson Valley Hospice in her memory.
