It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Terry Lee Shelley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a true outdoorsman, who passed away apeacefully on July 19, 2025, in his hometown of Frankfort, Indiana. He was 72 years old.
Born on July 23, 1952, in Frankfort, Terry was the son of William Ewell Shelley and Helen Louise (Gant) Shelley. Frankfort was not just his birthplace but also the place where he built a beautiful life. On June 11, 1973, he married the love of his life, Carol Jean Birden, in a union that blossomed into an enduring, unconditional love and formed the bedrock of their family.
For many years, Terry dedicated himself to his craft as a professional residential painter, known for his meticulous work and steady hand. His attention to detail and commitment to quality were evident in every stroke.
Outside of his profession, Terry's passions truly shone. He was an avid fisherman, happiest with a line in the water, patiently waiting for the next catch. The tranquility of the outdoors and the thrill of the sport brought him immense joy. And if you needed to know anything about NASCAR, Terry was your guy; a die-hard fan, he rarely missed a race, following every turn and cheering on his favorite drivers with unwavering enthusiasm.
Terry was a devoted father to his three children: Jason A. (Melissa) Shelley of Frankfort, Jamie L. (Rhiannon) Shelley of Frankfort, and Krista D. (David) Jarrell of Frankfort. He cherished his role as "Papaw" to his nine grandchildren: Dyllan, Jaylen, Kelcy, Rhiese, GraceAnne, Chasity, Emilee, Noah, and Luke. They truly were the light of his life, and he embraced every moment spent with them, creating cherished memories that will be held dear.
Terry is survived by his loving wife, Carol, his three children and their spouses, and his nine grandchildren, all of whom will carry his memory in their hearts. He also leaves behind two sisters, Tonya A. (Michael) Heaton of Frankfort and half-sister Madonna J. Ritter of Brookston.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ewell Shelley (1992) and Helen Louise Shelley (1997), and several siblings: half-brother Ewell P. Shelley (2024), brother William L. Shelley (2018), sister Pamela Sue Shelley (2014), sister Brenda Lee Cottrell (2007), half-sister Julia K. Mann (2006), and brother Bobby J. Shelley (1998).
Terry's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His unwavering love for his family, especially Carol, his children, and his grandchildren, his quiet dedication to his work, and his enthusiasm for fishing and NASCAR will be remembered fondly. He leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and a life well-lived, a testament to a man who found joy in the simple pleasures and gave his whole heart to those he loved.
