In Loving Memory of Thelbert "Whitey"/"Buddy" Roark, Jr., 1947 - 2025
On August 7, 2025, our beloved father ('Pop'), grandfather, brother, cousin, and proud patriot, Thelbert "Whitey"/"Buddy"Roark, Jr.-affectionately known as "Buddy" to family and "Whitey" to Air Force friends-passed away at the young age of 78. He was surrounded by loved ones, including his devoted son, Thelbert Lloyd "San-Chan" Roark Ill, during his final weeks at the Durham VA Hospital.
A 1965 graduate of Halifax County High School, Buddy played on the Comet basketball team and worked part-time jobs while pursuing his interests, including digging up & collecting arrowheads. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served for 22 years, with assignments in California, Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Panama, and Florida. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant.
Following his military service, he returned home to South Boston, working in high tech security systems and later at Goodyear. In retirement, he co-founded the Blue Flame Chili Co-op and BBQ Benevolent Society; a successful commercial catering business known for smoked meats. It served customers like NASCAR's Ward Burton and raised money for such causes as the Wounded Warriors Project. A passionate gun collector and American Legion Honor Guard-member, Buddy took great pride in honoring fellow veterans.
He is survived by his son, Thelbert Lloyd Roark III (Molly) -
Raleigh, NC, granddaughter Clorissa -Durham, NC, grandson Elijah -Vernon Hill, VA, sisters Mary Jane Roark -South Boston, VA, Helen Roark Angel Osteen (Mike) -Jacksonville, FL, and Peggy Roark -
Raleigh, NC, as well as aunts Joyce Moore (Clyde) -Gretna, VA and Virginia Lanier -Grit, VA, 3 Nieces and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, T.L. "Whitey" and Annie Lee Roark, and his daughter, Jennifer Roark.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
