Thelma Norris Henderson, a beloved figure in her community and a beacon of love and kindness, passed away on February 3, 2025, in McRae, Georgia, at the age of 93. Born on October 4, 1931, in Douglas, Georgia, Thelma spent her life embodying the values of faith, family, and friendship.
Thelma's journey was one of dedication to both her faith and the lives of those around her. She pastored several Church of God churches, a role in which she flourished, impacting countless individuals with her warm spirit and undying love for God. Among her many accomplishments, she is fondly remembered for reopening the Milan Church of God, facilitating a space where the community could gather in worship and fellowship. Alongside her pastoral work, she also had a previous career as a seamstress, lending her skills and creativity to many.
Those who knew Thelma cherished her pleasant and sweet personality. She loved to visit with people, always taking the time to listen to their stories and share in their joys and sorrows. Her warmth and genuine interest in others made her a treasured friend and confidant.
The legacy of Thelma lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her son, Jim (Rita) Norris of Milan, daughter, Wanda Faye McLendon of McRae, daughter-in-law Ann Norris of Milan; and stepson, Jack (Audrey) Henderson of Chief, FL. Thelma also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: John (Joey) Norris, Josh (Brandi) Norris, Danley (Krystal) McLendon, Misty (Bay) Roberson, and Starlit (William) Pope. She took pride in her role as a Nana to her great-grandchildren—Jamie, Jesse, Jaley, Jayda, Gavin, Alyssa, Danielle, Brandon (Heather), Hannah (Josh), Noah (Stella), Brad, Nick, Sarah (Matthew), Ethan, and Miriam Roberson—and great-great-grandchildren Jaxson, Raelynn, Lucas, and Adalyn Leyland.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husbands, Marcus D. Norris, Jr. and Charles Edward "Tom" Henderson, her parents, Jim C. and Lessie Clements Thomas, and her beloved son, Kenneth Ray Norris. Their loss was felt deeply, yet Thelma’s faith and resilience helped her to navigate through life's challenges.
A visitation honoring Thelma will be held on February 5, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Vaughn Funeral Home, McRae. Burial will take place at Rocky Pond Baptist Church Cemetery, Douglas.
As we remember Thelma Norris Henderson, we reflect on her warm personality, unyielding faith, and the profound impact she had on the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. Her legacy of love and ministry will continue to resonate within her family and community for generations to come.
