Thelma Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - West Chapel on Mar. 12, 2026.
Thelma Jean Smith, 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 23, 2026.

Born on September 30, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, Thelma was the daughter of Cyntheria Paige. She spent most of her life in South Bend, where she raised her family and built a legacy defined by love, generosity, and devotion to those around her.

A proud graduate of Central High School, Thelma dedicated many years of service to St. Joseph Hospital before retiring. She was known for her strong work ethic and caring nature, but her greatest role was as the steady and loving center of her family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Calvin Smith (December 2019), her daughter Alfreda Bayman (January 2020), and several siblings. Thelma was one of eight children - Margaret, Shirley, Barbara, Priscilla, Bernadette, Herbert, and Chris. She is survived by her sister Bernadette (Works) Shores and her brother Christopher Taylor.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Terri (Gregory) Bradshaw, John (Karana) Smith Jr., Mia (Dennis) Doaks, and Brian Smith. She was a grandmother to eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, holding a special bond with those closely woven into her daily life. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who were part of her extended family circle.

Thelma was known for her good cooking, generous heart, loving spirit, and openness. Her home was a gathering place - filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals, the sound of card games, shared stories, and joyful laughter. She welcomed everyone with open arms and was always there for anyone who needed comfort, guidance, or simply a listening ear.

Her love shaped generations. Her strength carried her family through life's storms. And her presence made the world feel warmer and safer for those fortunate enough to know her.

To her family, she was home.

Though she will be deeply missed, the legacy of her love, resilience, and kindness will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all whose lives she touched.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at Palmer Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, Indiana 46628. A repass will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Hedwig Memorial Center.. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate her life.
