It is with deep sorrow, but profound gratitude for her life, that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Grandma Thene Khounsacknarath, who left this world on October 18, 2025 at 10:46 AM, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Grandma Thene was born on September 3, 1923, in the village of Ban Laonot, in the city of Champhone, province of Kwang Savannakhet, Laos. She was the embodiment of strength, kindness, and resilience-a woman whose life spanned continents, generations, and incredible change.
She was married to Sing Khounsacknarath, with whom she built a legacy of love, raising five children: Mr. Thoi Khounsacknarath (deceased), Mrs. Moi Khounsacknarath (deceased), Mr. Somkhit Khounsacknarath, Mr. Khamkhay Khounsacknarath, and Mr. Khamkheuang Khounsacknarath. Her devotion to her children and grandchildren knew no bounds, and she was the foundation upon which her family was built.
On August 9, 1984, Grandma Thene immigrated to the United States, settling in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania with her three youngest children. Though far from her homeland, she remained deeply connected to her roots, living a quiet, humble life centered on family, faith, and the teachings of Buddhism.
In July 2022, seeking a more peaceful environment in her later years, Grandma relocated to Wartrace, Tennessee to live with her fourth child and family. It was here, amidst nature and love, that she spent her final chapter.
Despite her age, Grandma faced life with quiet strength and acceptance. Following a minor fall that resulted in a stroke and brain hemorrhage, her family made the difficult but compassionate decision to place her in hospice care. She passed gently in her sleep, with no signs of pain-just peace.
Grandma Thene lived the Dharma. Her belief in the teachings of the Buddha was evident not just in her words, but in how she lived: with open hands, an open heart, and a deep, unshakable kindness. She gave freely, forgave easily, and welcomed all with humility. Even in her final days, she reminded us of the beauty in impermanence and the grace of letting go.
While we grieve her loss, we celebrate the rich, full life she lived. We remember her warm smile, the stories she told, the laughter she shared, and the prayers she offered with such serenity. These moments are now our cherished memories.
According to her faith, death is not the end, but a continuation. Grandma Thene has now begun her final journey-free from suffering, moving toward liberation and lasting peace. We send her forward with all our love, and we hope the merit of our thoughts and actions help guide her toward that ultimate freedom.
May we continue to honor her not only with words, but by living in the way she taught us: with compassion, patience, humility, and love.
Thank you, Grandma. You will live on in all of us.
Buddhist funeral rites will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2025, in the chapel of London Funeral Home (324 West Church Street Lewisburg, TN 37091) with Khamko Xayavong officiating. Cremation ceremony will follow.
