Theodore “Ted” W. Spoelstra, Jr., age 93, passed away January 14, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born October 30, 1932, the son of Theodore W. and Susan (Emery) Spoelstra.
Ted attended Ottawa Hills High School. From March 1950 to August 1953, he proudly served in the United States Air Force as part of the Air Police during the Korean War. Following his service, he graduated from Maple Valley High School. Ted began a long career with Michigan Bell Telephone in March 1955, retiring on October 30, 1992, after 37 years of dedicated work in Hastings.
In February 1957, Ted married Clara Marie Burdick, and they shared 32 years of marriage until her passing in 1989. In May 1992, he married Marie Gillons, with whom he spent 24 years until her passing in 2016. Ted was a longtime member of the Hastings Free Methodist Church.
He enjoyed woodworking, golf, and square dancing, and he treasured time spent with family and friends. For 12 years, he wintered in Florida, where he made many special memories.
Ted is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Diane Ramsey; his brother, Robert Spoelstra, sisters Marian Bosma, and Sally Olson; his great grandson, Cooper Stultz; and his son in law, Tad Davis.
He is survived by his children Ted (Bev) Spoelstra, Sue Davis, and Cara (Mike) McClure; step children, Sue (Eric) Gannaway, Gregory (Maureen) Gillons, and Steven (Lou) Gillons; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM with the funeral service at 11:00 AM at Hastings Free Methodist Church, 2635 M-43, Hastings, MI 49058. A luncheon will follow. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville, Michigan. Arrangements by Girrbach Funeral Home. To leave an online condolence visit www.girrbachfuneralhome.net.
