Theresa M. Hoofnagle

May 16, 1925 - January 28, 2024

Theresa M. Hoofnagle, 98, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family.

Theresa Marie Wagner was born on May 16, 1925 in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Leo and Magdalen (Demuth) Wagner. She was raised in Gilbertville and it was there, she attended grades K-8 at the Immaculate Conception School. At age 16, she began living part time with a close family friend in Waterloo, where she worked as a key punch operator at Rath's meat packing company. On weekends, dances at the Electric Park Ballroom was a favorite place to go for Theresa and her friends. It was there she met the love of her life, Wayne Hoofnagle. On June 21, 1948, they were united in marriage at the Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville, IA. From this union, Theresa and Wayne were blessed with eight children.

Theresa was everybody's Mom. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and friend to all. She spent countless hours in her garden, providing her family with year round canned and frozen vegetables, fruits, jellies, apple sauce and wine. She created and maintained many flower beds around the yard. Gladiolus, peonies, and clematis were among her favorites. She loved and homed our many pets and strays that came to her door and passed her love and care for gardening and animals to her kids.

People often asked, "How did she do it all?" The answer is, "Very well!"

Survivors include his three sons, Dean (Leo Galicinao), Lyle (Diana) of Minneapolis, Kim (Karen) of Oelwein; three daughters, SuZanne (Mark Chapleau) of Iowa City, Dawn (Scott Ferguson) of Fryeburg, ME, Annie of Kennett Square, PA; 16 grandchildren, Starri (Mike Sommerfield), Eric (Nina) Ladewig, Nicholas (Emily) Ladewig, Amy (Xzavier Julion), Andrew (Shanna)Hoofnagle, Eric, Ian and Seth Ferguson, Gracie, Libbie and Emma Morgan, Leatrice and Philippe Galicianoa, Gina, Nicole and Riley Chapleau; seven great-grandchildren: Jazmine Hedges, Lilly Ladewig, Michael Joe Hoofnagle and Xzavier, Zaren, Helena and Carissa Julion, Wyatt Ladewig.

Preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; parents: Leo and Magdalen Wagner; son, Alan James Hoofnagle, and a daughter Lynette Lorraine Hoofnagle, three brothers: Bernard, Jerome and Vince Wagener; along with four sisters: Juanita Wagner, Delores Lantz, Margaret O'Connell and Lorraine Neisen.

Public visitation for Theresa will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service West Ridgeway located at 300 West Ridgeway, Waterloo, IA 50701. There will be a 5:00 p.m. Rosary and 7:00 p.m. Vigil service. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at St. Edwards Catholic Church with Father Scott Bullock officiating. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services at the church. Theresa will be laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum immediately following services.
