THERESA NORTHWAY Obituary

THERESA NORTHWAY 11/11/1969 - 04/02/2025 Theresa Irene Northway (Welty), age 55, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on April 2, 2025, surrounded by her family. Theresa was born on November 11, 1969, and grew up in El Dorado, Kansas. She was rarely seen without a smile on her face and her gentle, kind presence could be felt by anyone who met her. Theresa was married to Paul Northway for 23 years and mother to Cole and Jody Northway. Her unconditional love and devotion to her family permeated her home life. She had a way of making people laugh and keeping the mood light, even when times were difficult. As an artist, she was always creating beautiful things, whether pursuing drawing, sewing, or ceramics. She was not afraid to try challenging projects like remodeling, furniture-making, and gardening and knew how to hammer, saw, and weld. She had a keen eye for design and quality and enjoyed antiquing, thrifting, and garage sales. Theresa liked yoga, and also camping and hiking with her family. She was a free spirit, who loved to do her own thing, such as bicycle all over Kansas. Theresa attended Washington Elementary School, El Dorado Middle and High School. She received an Associate Degree from Butler County Community College, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wichita State University, and a Master of Fine Arts from Montana State University. Theresa did post-graduate work at Skagastrond NES Artist Residency in Iceland (2012). She was a visiting professor at the University of Incarnate Word and Northwest Vista College. She taught middle school for Northside Independent School District (2021-2024). Theresa is survived by her husband, Paul Northway; children, Cole and Jody Northway; parents, George and Adela Welty; brother, Brian (Leah) Welty; niece, Ashley Welty; nephew, Brandon Welty; aunt, Catherine Price (Charles); aunt, Betty Arrington (John); uncle, Richard Welty; cousins, Debbie Hataway-McCord, and Diane Rhodes (Bruce). Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Prince of Apostles Catholic Church, 111 Barilla Place, San Antonio, TX 78209. Celebration will follow at the church hall.

She was one of my favorite teachers that I will always remember.

May 1, 2025

For the short time she taught me before her sudden disappearance, she was warmhearted and gracious to me as well as all the students and faculty around her. Though battling, she chose to show up to work and teach her students. An all too altruistic and selfless act. Though I never knew her personally, she seemed like an amazing human being. Her creativity and personality was infectious and radiant through her art. May she always be remembered and missed by all that knew her. My heart goes out to her family and friends who got to know her better than I unfortunately ever will.
