Thomas Amato Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 25, 2026.
Thomas M. Amato, 75, Belford, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026.

Born in New York City to Helen and Angelo Amato, they moved to The Bronx where he was raised. He graduated and received his Master's degree from St. John's University and went on to build a meaningful career as a scientist, helping pave the way in research and development with intelligence and integrity.

Tom proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for 47 years with the Independent Fire Company of Belford, rising through the ranks to Fire Chief. He also served his company as President, Treasurer, and Trustee. His commitment to protecting others and supporting his fellow firefighters was a source of immense pride.

He was predeceased by his parents Helen and Angelo and his sister Linda Sheehan. He is survived by his loving wife, Lucy of 52 years. Together they created a loving home that was the center of his world. He was a devoted father to Jill and her partner Christopher, Michele, Craig and his fiance Michelle (Elle). He was the proud and loving grandfather of Bellamie and Lucas, and his "fur grandchild," Wendy. His grandchildren were truly his pride and joy as well as his fur babies, Cagney and Lacey. Also surviving are his brother Mike Sheehan and many nephews and nieces.

In his spare time, Tom found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, cheering on his beloved Mets, tending to his lawn, and relaxing with a cocktail in the Caribbean sun. Known for his sweet tooth, warm smile, and witty sense of humor, Tom brought laughter and kindness wherever he went.

Tom will be remembered for his loyalty, generosity, humor, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His legacy of service and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A wake will be held Thursday from 4-7 PM at Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Rd. Middletown, NJ 07748
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM at St. Agnes Church, 103 Center Avenue, Atlantic Highlands.
