Thomas Armstead Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blair and Congleton Memorial Funeral Services, Inc. - Edenton on Feb. 10, 2026.
Thomas Willie Armstead was born on August 2, 1954, to the late Johnnie and Claudia Armstead. He was the youngest of thirteen children. He transitioned from this life on February 8, 2026.

Thomas was a proud graduate of John A. Holmes High School, Class of 1973. While still in high school, he demonstrated responsibility and dedication by driving a school bus to help transport students each day.

Thomas began his career working at United Peace & Dye then on to Double Cola Soda Company and later dedicated more than 30 years of service to Edenton Furniture Company, where he remained until the store closed and he retired. In addition to his employment, Thomas was also self-employed through his business, Armstead Services, where he repaired household appliances for many families in the surrounding community. He became well known for his favorite phrase, "Just buy you a new one," which he would jokingly say after being called out several times to repair the same appliance. He continued providing these services until his sudden death.

Thomas also enjoyed athletics and played softball for North Carolina Mutual for several years, traveling across the state of North Carolina and building lifelong friendships along the way.

Thomas joined Warren Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful and devoted member until his passing. He faithfully served the church in many roles, including Trustee, member of the Male Usher Board, Male Chorus, Senior Choir, Mass Choir and Parking Committee. Thomas also served his church family by driving the church van for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and choir travel. Thomas served as a longtime committee member of the Horton and Valentine Family Reunion, where he held leadership roles as President and most recently Treasurer. He was committed to keeping family connected and traditions alive.

On July 17, 1977, Thomas married the love of his life, Kay Anthony. Their marriage was blessed with forty-eight years of love, partnership, and commitment. To this union, three children were born, Thomas "Earl", TyShenna, and Tyrone.

He was preceded in death by his parents (Johnnie & Claudia Armstead), siblings (Bertha Lassiter, Ernest Armstead, George Armstead, Louis Armstead, John Armstead, Gladys Welch, Ruth Armstead and Emma Rankins), his son, Tyrone Armstead and grandson, ZaCari Spruill.

Thomas leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Kay Armstead; his children, Earl Armstead and TyShenna (Bobby) Spruill; his granddaughters and great grandsons; his sisters, Eva Wrighton, Shirley Maddred, Irma "Evonne" (Larry) Cherry, and Mildred "Ann" White; six sisters in law; four brothers in law; one aunt, Virgil Valentine; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
