Thomas Gerald "Tom" Backus

Thomas "Tom" Gerald Backus, age 74, of Moravia IA, passed away on November 3, 2025, at Clearview Home in Mt. Ayr, IA.
Tom was born on November 11, 1950, in Albia, IA, to Laurence and Alberta (Major) Dommer. He grew up attending school in Newton. Tom proudly served his country in the United States Maries Corps as a combat veteran during the Vietnam era from 1968-1978.
Tom spent his working career as a warehouse manager in the pharmaceutical industry. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball and continued throughout his life to love being outdoors, fishing, and golfing.
Tom is survived by 4 children, Tommy Joe, Corey Allen, KC, and Amanda Backus; 5 grandchildren, Kegan, Keely, Danny, Gryffin, and Ryder; his siblings, Phil and Michael Dommer; a sister-in-law, Sandy Backus; and his stepmother, Nadine Dommer. Tom is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and good friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Laurence Dommer; his mother, Alberta Backus; and brothers, Larry Backus and Randy Dommer.
Per Tom's wishes, his body has been cremated and a private family burial will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA.
An open memorial has been established to the family.
