Thomas Barter

Thomas B. Barter, 24, of Shrewsbury, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was diagnosed in 2018 with Lafora Disease but did not let it change his spiritedness.
Born on July 18, 2001, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Thomas was the beloved son of Alan J. "Butch" and Sheila A. (Bentley) Barter. Thomas graduated Shrewsbury High in 2019 where he loved being part of the cross country team.
Thomas embraced life with a great sense of humor, boundless energy and enthusiasm. He was an entrepreneur from an early age that evolved into a successful Ebay Store. He loved being outdoors, especially running, biking, hiking, camping, and surfing. He loved being a Boy Scout and earned the Rank of Eagle. He loved weather, especially tornadoes and wanted to be a
meteorologist. He has hiked Mount Washington, Surfed Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, and his storm chasing has brought him to Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma. Thomas cherished time spent with his family, loved attending any type of gathering, and never forgot a birthday or an opportunity to buy a gift for someone.
After being diagnosed with Lafora disease, he courageously participated in a two-year natural history study in Dallas, Texas, to help identify biomarkers and advance potential therapies. As a result of these efforts, a safety study for a potential treatment is now underway in Dallas, Texas.
Thomas is survived by his parents; his brothers, Benjamin and Wyatt; and his sister, Olivia, all of Shrewsbury. He is also survived by his grandparents, Cheryl Bentley of Falmouth, MA; Ellen Scafidi of Shrewsbury, MA; and Alan Barter (Joyce) of Naples, FL. He is lovingly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, David Bentley Sr.
Thomas will be remembered for his kindness, determination, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours at the Chiampa Funeral Home, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury.
