Thomas Burns Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes - Durand Chapel on Jan. 25, 2025.
Thomas Patrick Burns, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at his childhood home in Vernon, Michigan. Born on March 2, 1945, in Duffield, Michigan, to the late George and Lucy (Richards) Burns. Thomas's life was marked by his unwavering spirit, generosity, and wisdom.
Thomas graduated from Durand High School before honorably serving his country in the United States Army from 1964 to 1967. After his military service, he dedicated 27 years to Social Services for the State of Michigan, where his compassion and commitment to helping others shone brightly. Thomas's involvement in his community was extensive; he was a Life Member of the Dog and Gun Club and the Am-Vets. His passion for sports led him to coach football and play semi-professional football. He also enjoyed playing summer league and traveling league softball.
Thomas's love for football was unparalleled, and he was known for doing things his own way and in his own time, but he always had a positive demeanor. The unique nicknames he gave to everyone will have a lasting impression on them. Thomas never raised his voice, except in the heat of a sports game, and his love for computer games, especially World of Warcraft, provided him with countless hours of joy.
Vernon, the family homestead, was Thomas's grounding spot and the place he always called home. He lived in the same house since he was four years old, and it was there that he cultivated a life filled with love, laughter, and hospitality. Thomas was known for his generosity, often extending a helping hand or a kind word to those in need. He was also a lover of animals, especially his beloved dogs, Farley and Bubba.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Marcia; his son, Bryan (Sonya) Burns; his daughter, Denise (Steve Hamil) Robinson; his grandchildren, Zachary, Trystin, Alexandria, Ashlee, Alyssa, and Bryson; and his great-grandchildren, Braxton, Carter, Lillie, and Skylar. His stepchildren; Larry Watson Jr., William Watson, and Jacqueline Moss. He also leaves behind his sisters, Rose Culp, Marylee Humphrey, and Connie Straub. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucy Burns; his stepfather, Ellsworth "Ozzy" Osborn; his stepmother, Velda "Billie" Burns; his brothers, Lewis, Richard, William, and George. His sisters, Donna, Joanne, LucyAnn, and Ruth; his stepbrother, Lloyd Osborn; his stepsister, Jean Osborn; and his infant sister.
Thomas's life was a testament to his spirited nature and his ability to bring joy to those around him. He was a man who loved his beer and a party with family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him and in the stories that will be told for generations to come.
As we bid farewell to Thomas, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of passion, kindness, and an indomitable spirit that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He was a wise and generous soul who made the world a better place simply by being in it. Thomas will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be cherished and honored by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life.
