Born in Detroit, Michigan, Tom was a 1951 graduate of Birmingham High School and then Hope College (class of 1955). He began working for Dun & Bradstreet that same year. In 1956 he was drafted and served 2 years of active duty in the Army and another 7 in the Army Reserve. Tom worked at Dun & Bradstreet until 1977 when he joined his nephew, Bob Wheaton, at Wheaton's Concession Supply Company. He retired from Gold Medal Products in 2016 with a collective 39 years of employment.
Tom was a long-time member of Church of the Messiah UMC where, with his wife Nancy, he taught the kindergarten class for 35 years. Tom was also a founding member of the Westerville Area Civitan Club where he served in several capacities including Club President. He was also active in numerous activities, following his sons' interests including YMCA Indian Guides, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Westerville Junior Boys Baseball League (JBBL). His tenure as a volunteer in Scouting extended well beyond their time as youth member and included serving in numerous roles from Webelos Den Leader, Cubmaster, Scoutmaster and District Commissioner. In recognition to his service to young people, he was a proud recipient of the Silver Beaver Award; the highest honor that a local council can bestow upon a volunteer.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Carlson (nee Schneider); his parents, Carl and Bertha Carlson; sisters, Lois England, Esther Wheaton and Elizabeth Collins. Survived by sons, Carl Frank "C.F." (Jean Ann), Scott David (Anne) and Chad William; grandchildren, Katie, Kelsey, Erin, Sierra, Ashley and Bradley; great grandchildren, Mollie, Lillie, Brooks and Chloe. The family would also like to acknowledge Amelia Stevens who was Tom's constant companion for the past 5 years. She brought so much joy to his life. His family will be forever grateful for you and the time you spent with us.
