Thomas Clarence Carlson, 75, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on March 3, 2026, at the VA Medical Center after bravely battling prostate cancer for six years.
A memorial service will be held on April 1, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Central Church in Sioux Falls. Private family burial with military honors will take place prior to the service at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery.
Tom was born on April 26, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Clarence and Bernice Carlson. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High School. As a young boy, Tom loved spending time at Longfellow Park and developed a passion for hockey, playing from a young age through his school years.
After graduating high school, Tom proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor during the Vietnam War. Being a Marine and a veteran was something Tom carried with great pride throughout his life.
In 1971, Tom married the love of his life, Pearl, after the two met through mutual friends. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and enjoying the simple moments that made life special. They welcomed their first son, Christopher, in 1973, followed by their son David in 1976.
Tom worked as an industrial engineer for Smith Equipment, beginning his career in Minneapolis before transferring to Watertown, South Dakota. Over the years, Tom and his family lived in several places, including Dalton, Georgia; Dana Point, California; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Tom was known as a hard-working man with a playful spirit. A natural jokester who loved to have a good time, he enjoyed making people laugh and bringing energy wherever he went. He cherished time spent outdoors and especially loved golfing, boating with his family, downhill skiing, and camping trips to Northern Minnesota. Many of his favorite memories were made at the lake or on the golf course with Pearl by his side.
Tom had a deep love for Christmas, delighting in the joy and traditions the season brought. His faith was also important to him, and he found great meaning in attending Central Church in Sioux Falls and participating in Bible study.
Tom also had a soft spot for animals and was especially fond of dogs, always showing kindness and affection to his four-legged companions.
More than anything, Tom loved his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Pearl Carlson; his sons, Chris (Amanda) Carlson and David Carlson; his grandson, Carter, who brought him great pride and joy; his brother, Harry Carlson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bernice Carlson, and his sister, Barbara Cornelius.
Tom will be remembered for his strong work ethic, sense of humor, love of family, devotion to his country, and the joy he brought to those around him.
