Thomas A. Cowper Jr., 94, of
Port Huron, Michigan, was promoted to glory at the Blue Water Hospice Home on Friday, January 30th, 2026 after a brief illness.
He was born March 3rd, 1931 (on his mother's 25th birthday) in Port Huron Hospital to (Thomas) Albert Cowper and Eva Forstner.
He graduated from Port Huron High School in 1948 at the age of 17. He enlisted in the US Army and served in Alaska from June 1948 to May 1952 during the Korean War. He returned to
Port Huron, Michigan where he met and married the love of his life Darlene E. Brewer on December 5th, 1952. They celebrated over 70 years of marriage prior to her passing.
Thomas worked for Mueller Brass for several years before getting a job with the United States Post Office. He became a supervisor at the post office and retired in 1987. He went back to work at the National Bank of Detroit (NBD) where he worked as a courier and later as maintenance for the thumb area of Michigan. Thomas retired for a second time.
Thomas became a Junior Soldier of The Salvation Army in 1938. He remained a devoted member for the rest of his life. He served as a Sunday School teacher for many years for many age groups. Other service roles he had were head usher, Y.P.S.M., and bus driver, etc.
His senior yearbook notation said, "Did you ever meet anyone who was more friendly and easy to get along with than Thomas Cowper?" This was true for his entire life. He loved to talk to people everywhere he went. His conversations usually include stories or jokes. If you asked him how he was, he would respond, "I'm happy in the Lord." He especially loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Darlene Cowper, his parents Thomas and Eva Cowper, sisters and their spouses Margaret (Byron) Preiss, Betty (Raymond) Mintz, and Tiny (Peter) Gollach. He was also preceded in death by all of his wife's siblings.
He is survived by his sister Eva May (George) Racz and his brother Robert Cowper. His five children, Renay Cowper, Larry (Jane) Cowper, Robin Robinson, Jeff (Jill Robinson) Cowper, and Darla (Dale) Bowen. Seven grandchildren Valerie (Jeff) Goldman, Angela (Michael) Cowper, Elissa (Andrew) Vogan, Trinity (Derek) Korth, Aaron (Brittany) Cowper, Aiden Bowen, and Nat Bowen. Great grandchildren Zillah & Aurora Cowper, Henry, Theodore, and Kathryn Vogan, Elon & Tessa Korth, and Jack & Eve Goldman.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday - March 21, 2026 at 12:00pm in the Salvation Army - 2000 Court St., Port Huron. Major Aaron Ortman will officiate. The memorial visitation will from 10:00am until time of service, with a luncheon following.
