Thomas Scott DeCantis

Thomas "Tom" Scott DeCantis, born on May 21, 1966, in Alexandria, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 59.

Tom dedicated his professional life to serving others with compassion and dignity. Feeling the call to funeral service at a young age, he was a graduate of the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. He began his career as a Funeral Director in Virginia, where he provided comfort and support to countless families during their times of need. Before joining the Altmeyer Family in Virginia Beach, Tom devoted many years to Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal.

His commitment to excellence and care led him to become a Regional Vice President with the Altmeyer family and Dignity Funeral Services, a role in which he traveled extensively across North Carolina, ensuring that the highest standards of service were upheld. Outside of his time in funeral service, he worked for CarMax, owned a Laundromat, was a successful real estate investor and property owner and loved cars.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Wanda Ann Scott DeCantis and Dominick P. DeCantis, as well as his sisters, Linda DeCantis-Graham and Debbie DeCantis.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret "Peggy" Wilhour, and her husband, Mark, of Anderson, SC; along with his niece, Erika S. Kaufman; several aunts, uncles and cousins and friends; and his beloved work family.

Among many other things, Tom will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his profession and the colleagues to whom he was a mentor and friend and the kindness he extended to all who knew him. His legacy of service and compassion will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held in the chapel of Church Street Funeral and Cremation at 11:00am on Saturday, April 25th.
