Thomas F. "Tim" Plummer, Jr.

I only just learned of Tim's passing. I had meant to write to him for the better part of a year, and I deeply regret letting time slip away. Tim took a chance on me when I was just out of college, and he never knew that his willingness to give me a shot led me to what has become a career in historic preservation and restoration. I wish I had taken the time to let him know how much his kindness and confidence meant to me; I hope my heartfelt prayers reach him.

Speaking for the officers and men of the 4th Training Battalion, US Army Field Artillery Training Center, Fort Sill, OK and the hundreds of West Point Cadets who were privileged to have had Colonel Plummer as an instructor or commanding officer, the Nation has lost a great man and his family a great father, husband, and grandfather. When Senator David McCormick and his wife wrote the new book "Who Believed in You: How Purposeful Mentorship Changes the World, " I immediately thought of Tim Plummer, "Big Red," as his admiring officers referred to him. Other than GEN Norm Schwarzkopf, I know of no other man who by his mere presence gave you a sense of greatness. LTC Plummer was then Captain Toler's inspiration and mentor, actually for many years, becoming a dear friend in our later years. Who else in our Army ever commanded an elephant drawn Artillery battery? (Thailand), or became best friends with a Soviet officer who saved his life in Egypt during the Cold War, or who built the 2nd largest atomic cyclotron as a cadet in 1958? Tim Plummer created for the entire US Army the method for teaching soldiers individual skills (demonstrate-practice-test to standard-conduct failure analysis-retrain). When he declined promotion to Colonel, everyone at Fort Sill knew he was the best Battalion Commander. Tim the professional Soldier encouraged a Captain recently passed-over for promotion by writing a glowing OER and having his boss the Field Artillery Training Center Commander endorse his recommendation for immediate promotion? I lived my boyhood dream as a Soldier in our Army for 31 years, as a direct result of that man caring about and inspiring me. God blessed us with this giant of a man, whom I am proud to say I knew and loved. Sad that he has passed from this life to find certain life after death.

To Tim's family, he was such a huge presence in Rose Valley Borough and in the Rose Valley Folk. Larger than Life. Always a gentleman. A smile and kind word whenever he spoke. What a legacy of service and leadership he leaves behind. How fortunate that you had such a role model for a father, grandfather and that we had the same in a friend.

Norma & I send our deepest condolences upon the loss of Tim, along with some wonderful memories of weeks in Avalon during the summer; bright days on Block Island; skiing in VT and everyday living in Fairfield, CT. Tim leaves us with his ever-present sense of love of Jesus the Christ, his family, friends and others he loved so much.
