Thomas Falkenberg Obituary

Thomas Falkenberg, M.D.

Dr. Thomas Falkenberg, known to many as Tom, passed away on February 17, 2025. He was a highly skilled and compassionate physician, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a dedicated friend and mentor.

Born in Germany in 1961, Tom immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings as a young boy. From an early age, he was known for his intelligence, curiosity, and exceptional talents across many areas. Hardworking and disciplined, Tom achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, played the trumpet in his high school marching band, and was an outstanding skier.

Tom had an innate passion for understanding how things worked, which was evident even as a teenager when he meticulously took apart the family car's engine and reassembled it, just for fun. He developed a keen sense of style and was often the best-dressed man in the room.

His love for cars, particularly sports cars like the Porsche 928, stemmed from an appreciation of exceptional design and brilliant engineering. He immersed himself in the Porsche community, attending races and meet-ups, and enjoyed annual drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway with fellow enthusiasts.

Tom also had a deep love for music, especially live performances. He and his wife, Heather, frequently hosted house parties featuring up-and-coming musicians. A devoted fan of the band Train, he attended more than 30 of their concerts, including three cruises, where he meticulously planned themed outfits for each night. He also had a special appreciation for The Who, often blasting their music throughout his home and car.

Tom earned his Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received his Doctor of Medicine degree, cum laude, from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he also served as Chief Resident.

From 1996 to 2025, Tom practiced ophthalmology in Fredericksburg, VA, where he transformed the lives of thousands of patients. A highly skilled surgeon, he was recognized by his peers as a leader in ophthalmological technology and innovation. More importantly, his patients knew him as a doctor who was deeply committed to their health and well-being, ensuring that every detail of their care was meticulously managed.

To his family and friends, Tom was a practical, disciplined man with extraordinarily high standards. He was also kind, sensitive, and full of fun. Thoughtful with his words, he spoke with intention, when he had something to say, people listened. His twinkling eyes and the quiet, consistent ways he expressed love left an indelible mark. He was the first call for his three children when they needed guidance, always eager to share his wisdom and protect those he loved. His impact on those around him cannot be measured, only honored and cherished by those fortunate enough to have known him.

Tom is survived by his wife, Heather; his children, Lauren, Erika (Josh), and Luc; and his granddaughter Iley. Also survived by his father, Karl Jorg; mother of his daughters, Christine Falkenberg; his siblings Inge (PJ), Martin (Anete), Rike (Adolfo), Barbara (John), and Christian (Maria); as well as thirteen nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025 at Covenant Funeral Service, 10830 Patriot Highway, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22408. A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Fredericksburg Baptist Church.

I am shocked, along with everyone else, to just now learn of Dr. Faulkenberg's passing. I was a patient of his and saw him, for the first time, to discuss if I was ready or not for cataract surgery. He put me at ease and I liked him instantly. By the time my surgery could be scheduled, he was already out on a medical leave of absence. To his family and friends...may the memories you shared over the years bring you much comfort in these difficult days ahead. Sincerely, Patricia Brown

I´m shocked to learn of his passing! Dr. Falkenberg was amazing, he will be missed. After searching for a doctor to help me with my vision issues, I was so discouraged until I met him. He was understanding, compassionate and took his time to research my issue. After surgery several years ago he restored my sight to the point I no longer needed glasses. When I was eight I had a disease that affected my sight. After 35 years I could now see without glasses. He was the best, prayers for his family.

Dr. Falkenberg was a caring and highly skilled physician. In 2003, I was almost killed in a car accident. After being discharged from MWH, Dr. Falkenberg came in on a Saturday to examine my injured eye and took glass shards from the edge of the eye. Three years ago, he did my cataract surgery. I will always remember his warm smile as well as his calm and gentle voice. He was a blessing to me and to this community.
